No its nothing wrong with connecting a external harddrive to a laptop. Usually docking stations wouldn't cause this problem. It could have been just a bad luck of the draw with your laptop. Man made it and it can fail. Just normal wear and tear

If you are connecting via a USB port and your HD docking station has no power supply of its own that could cause problems that might relate back to the motherboard. If that was the case then you should consider a proper USB HUB with its OWN power supply. This might avoid your problem from happening again.

many laptop usb ports cannot deliver the correct current AND voltage if many of them are being used at the same time. Manufacturers save money by building machines for "average" use and not for long term reliability and use. The average user may only plug a printer into his / her laptop and maybe a mouse. Not many treat a laptop the same way a desktop user would.

How can Western Digital hard disk drives be recognized by third party USB external docking stations?

The format on a disk, will not be relevant of recognition via an USB connector. To connect a drive via USB, the computer must have the correct driver for the hardware you are connecting. Be sure you connect the HD coerce to the external harness and make sure it is supplied with the correct voltages.
When you connect a working system on the USB connector and the drive does not have a format, the computer will see that and ask you if it should format the drive.

I bought my seagate free agent go in april of 2011 and registered it as well. I have all my important work layouts on this and the usb connector on the external hard drive broke off and now i cant connect...

First, since you purchased the product in 4/11, you should contact the manufacturer for a replacement housing for the hard drive. If that's unsuccessful (or if you don't have that much time), you can purchase an external docking station. Then remove the hard drive from it's case and insert it into the docking station.

I backed up my system and recently lost the hard drive. A new hard drive was installed, and I connected my Verbatim to my PC, but I have no idea how to put all the backed up data back to my PC. Can you...

All you need to do to backup the files on your old hard drive is by using a Hard Drive Docking Station. you can take your hard drive to a local store and ask for a docking station that would fit on your hard drive, the docking station is like a device the you can connect to your computer using a USB cable.
Once you have it, your old hard drive will just function as an external storage device.

You can still save your information if you remove the actual hard drive from its enclosure.

Simple as opening the enclosure, remove the hard drive then use an external hard drive dock - here

A hard drive dock instructions are here. Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUrw9W3-FcA

and connect it to your computer for back up to a new hard drive.

A how-to can be found here. Youtube = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ_vjyvK28A

Let me know if this works.

Remove Any Docking Stations or Port Replicators From the Computer Note: Docking stations and port replicators are optional equipment. If you are unsure if you have a docking solution attached to your computer, refer to Table 1 and Table 2 for examples. To remove the docking station or port replicator, perform the following steps: Shut down the computer. Remove the docking station: Universal Docking Stations: Disconnect the docking station's USB cable from the computer. D/Port or D/Dock: Remove any cable locks from the security slot on the right side of the docking station. Move the slide lock forward to the unlocked position. Press the Eject button and lift the computer from the docking station. C/Port II or C/Dock II: Remove any cable locks from the security slot on the left side of the docking station. Unable to transfer files from an acomdata external hard drive.

Borrow a friends "hard drive docking station" and remove the hard drive from the other external drive and place in the docking station and see if you can read the drives contents. The docking stations can be purchased at Best Buy or Office Depot if you want your own. Your external drive could have a faulty power supply or you really could have a hard drive that has developed bad sectors and that is a disaster for your data. When a drive starts acting up, you really need to act and transfer important files to a new drive or burn the data to DVD's.

External hard drive connection through the dvr station

i have the same problem. as far as i know it is because large external hard drives require more power and the archos does not provide enough power. it would probably work if u got a hd which had a separate power source.
