Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

1 Answer

Unit doesn't get cold. yesterday food in freezer began thawing and i put a thermometer in and it was very warm. i unplugged unit for about 30 minutes.(i was not sure if we had a power outage and the condenser just needed the unit to be off like a window A/C unit does.) plugged it back in and eventually the freezer got down to 9 degrees. it stayed there a little while then i saw the temp begin to rise up to about 43. i then unplugged it again and left it off. today i cleaned the coils on the bottom very well, both from the front and then the back. now when i plug the refrigerator back in, it runs a bit then i hear a click and then another click. it doesn't get cold. the fan at the back on the bottom is putting out air and the one in the freezer is running. is it possible i may have hit a wire with the vacuum as i was cleaning? or is it something i need to have a repair person come out for. i do not have any service contract on the unit. it is a kenmore elite model 50799002 manufactured dec 2000. thanks for your help.

The model number you listed is not shown. Sears has a number system like this KENMORE, Model No. 253.64802400 See if you can find a number similar to that on the refrigerator. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Freezer is working, but fridge is warm. Fan in back of fridge will not shut off.

If your fridge is not designed with an automatic de-icing function, then there may be an ice dam blocking the cold air from moving from the freezer to the fridge. I had a fridge once that would get blocked with ice even if the rest of the freezer was ice-free.

Unplug your unit (often shutting off the breaker is easier than digging behind the fridge for the plug).

Pull everything out of the freezer and put it in a box. Cover the box completely with blankets to insulate it so your food doesn't thaw and spoil. Prop open the freezer door and let any ice accumulation melt.

Once everything has thawed out, wipe up the water and plug the unit back in. You should be able to tell after 10 minutes or so whether the fridge is getting cooler or not.

My ge profile arctica is about 9 years old. It is freezing food in the refrigerator, temp control is set at a 4 and the thermometer inside reads anywhere from 28 -40 in various areas of the fridge. Milk...

first run the diagnostics on the unit from the tech sheet inside the unit, then if thermistors are bad replace these there are 2 one on the left and one on the right wall in both fridge and freezer,if good per diagnostics then replace the electronic damper door located between the fridge and freezer compartments in the upper left hand corner of the fridge behind the plastic grille as these doors break and jamb open or shut and the temps can no longer be regulated during the diagnostics tests you can hear this door operate if its operating correctly, lastly,if these fail to solve your problem, replace the main control board in the back behind a panel

I have a freezer top refrigerator in a rental unit of mine. It is only a few months old. My tenant said the freezer is working fine, but the fridge is not cold. He has tried putting the cold switch in...

Have him put a thermometer in a cup of water overnight and set the upper freezer
knob to the middle position and the temp control to midpoint. The refrigerator temp should
be between 34 and 38 degrees. You can get a thermometer at walmart or an appliance
parts store. If you continue to have the problem then change out the defrost termination
thermostat (this was a common failure in many of my frigidaire units). It is located in
behind the freezer back panel, it is clipped to a tube and has two wires coming to it.
Remember to unplug unit before servicing. The part is under 20 dollars usually.
The model number is located in the fresh food compartment on the left side. Hope this helps

FREEZER SIDE TOO MUCH ICE FRIDGE SIDE NOT TOO COLD

If it has ice buildup on the back wall inside the freezer, it appears to have a defrost problem. Unplug it, put your food in another unit (or ice chests), open the freezer door and let it thaw out overnight for at least 12 hours or more, or until all the ice has melted from *behind* the back wall. Then close the doors and run it for 4 hours and check to see if the fresh food side is cold. If it is, call a repairman to fix the defrost problem. That could be a burned out heater, terminator, or defrost timer depending on your exact model.

Does freezer cool like the cold food section? Did this suddenly happen, and frozen food began to thaw?  Most freezers control the cooling in the cold food section. The freezer must work fine before the cold food section will work fine. Let us know more, Thanks JT
