If you want to use the Drive on a Mac, then you can use the Mac to format the hard drive.
In that case connect the disk to the Mac and use the Mac disk utility:
On disk utility select the new disk and chose partition.
If you want to use the disk only with mac, you can chose the maximum available space for your partition, and set the partition type to Mac Os Extended.
