Question about Apple iPhone Smartphone
Keypad not working
First try a hard reset. Hold down the power and home button simultaneously for 10 seconds until the iPhone reboots.
If that doesn't work you need a new digitizer. If it's a 3G I would advise replacing the digitizer. If it's a 2G I would not advise replacing the digitizer b/c you would have to replace the LCD, Digitizer, and the Glass Panel and the cost would exceed $100.
You could also consider selling your iPhone AS IS for parts or repair on eBay, Craigslist, BuyMyTronics.com or I could make you an offer.
Hope this helps, Rate me please!

Which generation? First model? 3G? 3GS?
Are you saying that the screen doesn't work at all? Or the touchscreen works for opening apps, pics, etc but the keyboard doesn't come up? Or that when the keyboard comes up none of the keys work? Or some of the keys don't work? If you want better help please be more specific so that we can help solve your problem.
That said, here is info about touchscreen problems in general.
Exposure to water messes up the touchscreen. It is my understanding that there are moisture detectors on the phone, but I haven't seen them and maybe this is a rumor.
A certain serial number range of 1st gen iPhones have a known issue with touchscreen failure. Even though the phones are technically out of warranty, this touchscreen failure is still covered.
Two weeks ago I got a new 1st gen iPhone from my local Apple store, even though I bought it in October, 2007.
