Hold the cassette with the spine toward you. On the right hand side, there are 4 plastic ports and a single one above them. The single is your write-protect tab.

When I try to record the screen says 'check tapes erase protection tab'

Normally, tape cartridges have a protection tab on them that when removed prevents users from recording over. A piece of masking tape over the empty hole will allow you to record on the cassette.

It sounds like you are talking about a VHS tape look at the lower left corner of the tape as you are putting it into the vcr there should be a small square hole there with the tab broken off put a piece of scotch tape over this hole it will than let you record on the tape again

Checkthe tab

There is a protection for erasing off your recordings and so if the DV tape has got the tap taken out you might have to reset it in. remove tape and see at the back side of the tape for the tab.
Once it is set back the recording link will activate the camcorder to go for recording over this tape.

Tape doesn't stay down, keeps popping back out of cassette, on my Sony CCD-TVR608. Any ideas?

you are prohibited from recording on thips tape. This is because the red tab on the side of the tape that faces you when you are inserting the tape inside the camera has been put in 'SAVE' position . to be able to record o the tape you need to use your fingernail to slide the red tab to the 'REC' position.

to help you understand this issue:
Tape and recording protection
250px-8mm_cassette_erase_tab.jpg magnify-clip.pngThe write-protect switch (right) prevents accidental erasure. .
To prevent the recording on the tape from being erased, there is a small write-protect tab that can be moved to one of two positions, labeled "REC" and "SAVE". Comparing the sliding tab to a door, the tape is in the "REC" position is when the "door" is open and the "SAVE" position when it is closed. (Not all tape cases have markings for this information!) The tape can only be recorded on (or recorded over) when this tab is in the "REC" position. This is an improved version of the VHS write-protect tab, which prevents erasure after it has been (permanently) broken off.

I have a padlock symbol on my Philips 720 transcriber which is hindering me in scrubbing my tapes what can I do to get rid of the padlock

There is tiny plunger that senses when the tape has been write-protected by breaking off the tab at the front of the tape cassette. If this plunger is broken it will assume the tape is write-protected and will not all ow you to erase it. This plunger must be replaced but it is not an easy job.

Record problem

Make sure the Erase Protection tab is in the closed position that allows recording. If not, slide the tab. Some tapes have removable tabs. If the tab has been removed, simply cover the hole with adhesive tape.
