I need to open a port to use utorrent

I have tried everything to open a port for utorrent but nothing is working. I am on a private network with 3 computers on it. I have already tried portforward.com with no luck along with many other sites. Can someone please give me a step by step on how to forward my port?

To open a port, you first need to know what port you need to open. Once you know this you need to access you router properties. Open your browser and go to http://192.168.1.1/ (BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN GOING THERE! You can brick your router!). when it asks for username and password, type it in if you know it, if not check your manuel or http://www.routerpasswords.com/ to find the default login. Once your in there, find something that mentions about ports, for instance, I have a Lynksys router and my port forwarding is under Applications and Gaming>Port Range Forward. When you find the correct page, type in the port number, save it, and there you go! If it mentions about TCP/UDP open one at a time, test it, then close the unused one to prevent a hacker highway into your computer and/or network. To test if your port is open without waiting forever for your torrent or utorrent to say that its still closed, use this free lightweight port checker that I use. http://portforward.com/help/portcheck.htm

Hope this helps,
Dan

UTorrent dowload stops when I turn my VPN on. How to set it up?

An alternative is not to stop uTorrent, but to block the traffic.
Assuming you're on Windows, and your torrent machine is always connected to your local network (i.e. it's not a notebook that's sometimes connected to public networks), the simplest method is to set up firewall rules to block uTorrent from having any network access unless the VPN is active.
  1. Configure the local network connection as a private network, and have all new networks encountered automatically considered public (that means any new VPN connection would be public). There was a simple way to do this with Windows 7, not sure about later versions.
  2. Create firewall rules to block uTorrent from sending any traffic via private networks, and allow it to send traffic via public networks.
  3. If you use the web UI then you will need to add an exception for the web UI port on the private network.
Once this is done if the VPN goes down uTorrent won't be able to send or receive any traffic at all (you'll see active torrents turn red).
Another option is to set up a second machine just for the VPN which forwards all traffic to the VPN Service (this is a good use for an old netbook). Then configure the torrent machine to use the VPN machine as its gateway. This only works if all programs on the torrent machine need their traffic to go via the VPN (or the other programs can be configured to send via your router).

Hi, I'm having problems port forwarding my Thompson TG585 v8. Im trying to port forward for utorrent application but it does not seem to work, everytime i get an error saying "port is not...

- Please check if it's UDP or TCP. You might have selected TCP for port forwarding but Torrent also uses UDP. For some ports that's important to make both forwarding. One for TCP, the other for UDP.

- If this doesn't work, you need to go deeper. You need to have access to an external computer on internet (a friend) from which you can start a telnet. For instance :
telnet mypublicip 45682

On your side, you need to check what's coming on your network interface. Two options to achieve this :
- Either you book a linux live cd (kubuntu), and you run in a console :
sudo tcpdump -ni eth0
(eth0 is the first ethernet adapter of your workstation).
- Either you use wireshark on Windows, this should do the trick, but you cannot be sure that there is no other software blocking on your current installation.

Iv got a BT home hub 2 cant get conections for utorrent even though opened firewalls

There are ISPs that block utorrent. I found this explanation of how to do port forwarding on the BT home hub, though: http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/BT/BTHomeHub/Utorrent.htm
So, all I can suggest is to open the ports on your home hub as suggested above and to connect your computer straight to your home hub rather than to your CWR-854 (unless you actually have no such router and just picked that to ask the question under).
It is possible that someone has decided that you should not use torrents (they slow down everyone because they actually have the nerve to use the internet) and they are associated with thieves. Not to mention that there are tons of legit uses for them,
This could be someone in your ISP or your house. So do you have access to everything? You can poke around with telnet - can you access the ports on the other systems that utorrent accesses to make itself part of the network of systems that are downloading and sharing the torrent?
But if one knows the ports it is easy to block torrent.
If you have multiple routers that do nat, the home hub has to forward to your router, not to your system. So if your router is 192.168.3.12 and your system is 192.168.5.6, the BT home hub has to forward to the port on your router, on 192.168.3.12 , and your router has to forward to your system on 192.168.5.6. If the home hub tries to forward directly to your system (if you have multiple routers, which you might have because of the way you asked your question) then it won't work since your router hides 192.168.5.6.

Router problem

Hello!

Here is a guide on how to setting up port forward on DSL 500T for uTorrent:
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DSL-500T/Utorrent.htm

If you can't reach the router as described in the link above, than you need to contact whoever provided you with this router. If the router was provided by your ISP (internet service provider) than contact them directly asking how to access your router.

Hope this helps!

Cant open ports in elephant with router thomson TG585v7

You need to log on to the router using the default gateway.
Go to Start menu -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
type ipconfig
Note the default gateway
open your browser, in the address bar type in the default gateway ip address - like 192.168.1.254 --- or whatever the IP is.

That should open your router config pages... if it asks you for a user name and password... default usernames depend on your ISP usually, but try for the username Admin, admin, Administrator, administrator and for the password try the same as the username or leave blank... If you have no luck contact your ISP for logging on details.

A web page will open - go to
Toolbox
Game And Application Sharing
At top right click configure
Make sure UPnP and Extended Security are selected if you have those options
Then at the bottom
Create a New Game or Application
from there you just need to select which protocols you need to work with or select ANY
Enter the port you want opened
and add the same port number to the destination / trigger port.

That should be you. If not you need to telnet into you router
Telnet <default gateway IP>
and type Menu
The follow the previous instructions.

Firewall/ports

Hello there, you only need to open a port for utorrent, if you use a Router device for sharing your internet connection to more than 1 computer. If you do indeed own a router then you will need to log-in to it, via your web browser and change the necessary settings to forward the port that utorrent uses, to your local computers address.

Please write again if you need more support.

Hope this helps.

Port forwarding wrt54g

You simply enter the range of ports you want to allow. Select Both as the protocol and enter the IP address for the machine you want to allow to use Utorrent (eg:192.168.1.101). I use bittorent and this is the port I had to open 38361-38361. Make sure there is a check mark next to enable. Once that is done and you save the settings you should be good to go. Not really a lot to it.

On some networks it’s impossible to use BitTorrent. For example, if you’re at work, school, or connected to Comcast or a public hotspot. Here is some help with that.

Change NAT to open

The ports should be opened only in the router not in the x.box, go to a working pc..

answer3.gif
To allow traffic from the internet to enter your local network, you will need to open up ports or the router will block the request.

Because our routers use NAT (Network Address Translation), you can only open a specific port or ports to one computer at a time. For example: If you have 2 web servers on your network, you cannot open port 80 to both computers. You will need to configure 1 of the web servers to use port 81. Now you can open port 80 to the first computer and then open port 81 to the other computer.

  • Step 1 Open your web browser and enter the IP address of your D-Link router (192.168.0.1). Enter username (admin) and your password (blank by default).

Step 2 Click on the Advanced tab at the top and then click Virtual Server on the left side.

Step 3 Check Enabled to activate entry.

Step 4 Enter a name for your virtual server entry.

Step 5 Next to Private IP, enter the IP address of the computer on your local network that you want to allow the incoming service to.
  • to check ip in your pc.. go to start menu click run.. type cmd and hit ok
  • in the black window enter ipconfig and hit enter, you will find the ip address

Step 6 Choose Protocol Type - either TCP, UDP, or both. If you are not sure, select both.

Step 7 Enter the port information next to Private Port and Public Port. The private and public ports are usually the same. The public port is the port seen from the WAN side, and the private port is the port being used by the application on the computer within your local network.

Step 8 Enter the Schedule information.

Step 9 Click Apply and then click Continue.
  • This would fix your problem..
