Something is causing the spark timing to be late. Check it with an old neon timing light after marking top-dead-center with paint. .

Change the coil to a pointless type or add a chip to the old coil, cut the wires to the pointsl. No need to remove the flywheel just the sheet metal housing..Connect the kill switch wire to the coil.

I have a Briggs & Stratton tiller motor 5hp that does not have points.there are two wires terminated to the coil.1 with a ring terminal and 1 with a stripped end.Where do they go?

the wire with the ring terminal will go under a mounting bolt ( ground) the other will connect to the plate at the end of the throttle cable under the insulated bit
when you push the throttle to stop , that plate will short out the wire with the stripped end and top the engine

This is a Briggs and Stratton Rototiller, Model 130292-1636-02. I think my Armature might be bad. This is a Briggs and Stratton part # 397358 with electronic trigger (starter). After cleaning my fly-wheel...

the fly wheel is touche you need no more than 5 thousands clearance between the
fly wheel and the coil for the best spark

now on the other hand if you have points on this unit its best to put in new points
and condenser and set the points the same settings as the coil

this will get spark for you

hope this helps you
good luck

Same problem - Slow engine speed doesn't run smooth either

You should look at the numbers AFTER the model and type number you noted in your post. The first two digits of the CODE are the year the engine was made. This looks to me like an old 5hp Briggs....old enough that it wouldn't have electronic ignition. If it has the old points and condenser, it could likely need a tune up. Electronic ignition modules or electronic ignition coils are available for this engine - see your Briggs dealer.

If you had the gas tank off, did you replace the gasket between the carb and engine block? This particular engine uses 2 (two) gaskets, not one.

By the way, you don't want to make a governor spring. It's best to use the one specifically manufactured for this particular engine or you run the risk of over-revving.
