Question about GALAXY Microsystems 63702 Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Freon leaked/exploded out of freezer causing major health hazard.

Bought the refrigerator from Sears in Dec 03, The refrig is used very little and is in a small cabin that we use rarely. Just last night---oh my gosh--- came home to a SUPER BAD gas like smell in side the freezer and sure enough it smelled like freon had exploded in the freezer leaving me to throw all the food away....take the refrig outside and the smell lingered for hours in the cabin....what the heck...It burned my eyes and still does today.... got very nauseous from the smell. No one at all hurt anything and it just like major leaked out or something>>> Has this happened to others??? I would totally warn someone about this major DANGER,,,,just think if we hadn't been home for a long time??? May have started a fire??? or worse freon leaking and burned the house down...would like to know what I can do? Had to throw refrig out...darn it.

Sound like a compressor burn out and leaked when freon burns it creates what is called fozgeen gas (not spelled correctly) a very pungent order you should be ok the gas was used in world war 1 fyi.

Could have answered better I have never seen or herd of a domestic refrig doing that. but any thing can happen. what to do for the future make sure voltage is with in 10% of the data plate on the in side of the box improper voltage will make a compressor hot , keep your condenser clean dirty condenser equals hot compressor oil brakes down compressor seizes up motor windings in compressor burn out. after thinking about this i'm betting your cabin electrical hit by lightning or power co. transformer problems refrig got a voltage spike i've herd of this happening and lastly un plug when not in use for a long period.

If you need freon you can't do it yourself

Could be caused by the drain hole below freezer coil being blocked by ice. You MUST remove all ice in drain under freezer coil. Use turkey baster to squirt hot water into hole and use hairdryer to defrost. Possible defrost thermostat is defective. Unit never goes into defrost, ice forms on coil and in floor of freezer. After defrosting may work OK for a week or two but gradually gets warmer because ice is blocking ports where cool air gets to refrig. May also have water in refrig box. Can also be caused by defective defrost timer.

Bottom freezer of my refrig no work good. Freon low from leak?

I have heard of it but it is very new. 300 is cheap for an evaporator change out. That maybe ok on labor but figure on adding the price of the part.

My freezer and refrig are cool but not cold

Your refrigeration unit probably leaked freon refrigerant. You may need to call for service for them to replace freon. Not a job you can do yourself unless you have proper equipment and knowledge.
I had the same problem.

I purchased a new GE bottom freezer refrigerator and it is not cooling. Everything is on, it dispenses water but the temperature doesn't get cold

If the panel temperature reads 0 F 0 F it is in the "DEMO" mode. This is normal if you purchase a floor model. To bring it back to normal mode press ENERGY SAVER & ADJUST FREEZER together for 3 to 5 seconds until it beeps. Then unplug the referidgerator for at least 30 seconds. Then plug it bck in. That will reset the stupid computer and get it back to normal operation.
