Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console

1 Answer

Disc Tray I opened my PS2 in order to re-adjust its lens. Now the Disc Tray will not open all the way. It does not look as though anything is impeding the tray, but it is hard to tell. Any suggestions?

Re: Disc Tray

You will need to get back the cover off and the laser tray cover off the fix this.

When putting the CD tray back in, the white piece that raises and lowers the Disc/laser frame has a white peg sticking up. before putting the Cd tray back in, slide the white piece all the way to the right towards the reset/eject buttons. guide the cd tray so that the white pin guides into the slot on the bottom of the cd tray. You might want to look at the bottom of the CD tray to see the track. The white pin/peg has to travel in this slot.

Model 50001 fat ps2 cleaned the lens adjusted the arm...

If your lens is not moving up and down the track at all even in bootup then sounds like your motor is fried. What i'm referring to is this:

You can find similar parts like this .::HERE::.

To verify this, open your dvdrom tray. Power off the PS2 via the swtich on the back of the PS2 (thus leaving the dvdrom tray open) Tare down your PS2 and remove the four screws on the top of your DVD-ROM unit (if this is a fat model, if it's a slimline model you'll have to remove that whole platic piece covering the unit itself) You may have to do some research on this next part (via google) but remove your DVD-ROM tray so you can see the guts of the DVD-ROM. Then power on your PS2. And ask yourself the following questions as you observe.

1.) Does the lens move at all even right after bootup?

2.) Is the siver bar part of the motor(pictured above) turning at all to make it move?

If it doesn't turn at all then there is your problem. If it does turn, and the lens doesn't move at all then the ribbon cable that connects the lens to the board maybe damaged or the lens itself is damaged.

Hope that helps

Disc Tray

The rubber band inside your PS2 might be broken, the rubber band supports the disc tray and it ejects and inserts the tray.

Sometimes if play too much long, some of the PS2 parts will be damaged by excessive heat, so my advice is that your minimum gameplay time must be 3-4 hours only.

Please den't even try forcing the tray to open, it will be more damaged.

Try resting your PS2 for about 1-2 days, after that try to open the tray, if the problem still persist bring to a PS2 fixer near you.

Disc Tray Issues

if your ps2 is upright and i have found this with mine the tray will not fully open as the tray will slouch down a bit when open and it could be getting caught best to have your ps2 downright position.

Ps2 will not read disc

Check your disk for scratches fingerprints ect,,
if thats all good step two
try useing a lens cleaner

****(( tip and trick for scratched disks ))****
a crayon rubbed on the disk then wiped off with a lint free cloth
no t-shirts dish towels that will just add more scratches
remember start at the center wipeing out to the edge.

if none of that works you may have a lens problem

My ps2 wont read any discs but it plays music discs and cd's

Hi Cozza,

Open the console up, and remove the cover over the Cd drive. Clean the lens of the Laser with a Q-tip lightly dampened with Rubbing alcohol. Use the dry tip of the Q-tip to dry the lens, look to see if you left any lint, and make sure the lens of clean.

PS2 problem

It's likely the lazer lens is out of alignment or requires replacing. Did your dvd cleaner also have a lens aligning part to it, you normally go through a spoken instruction(go to track 2 etc), as cleaning is sometimes not the only required solution.
