Question about Sony STR-DE698 Receiver

Sony PCM 48 Issue

I have a Sony TV 46" wega and a Sony AV Receiver HT-DDW790 and a scientific atlanta cable box. I connected the cable box to the tv using hdmi and then optical out of the tv to the receiver. However this produces a PCM 48 issue where i am not getting a full 5.1 surround sound.

I originally had it set up with HDMI from the cable box to the TV and optical out of the cable box to the receiver. This works if i go into settings of the cable box and change the audio out to dolby digital. however when i shut everything off and turn everything back on, the settings default back to HDMI audio out.

does anyone know how to help?

As long as you continue to have both HDMI and optical outputs connected at same time from the cable box, it will probably always choose the default as HDMI. If you do not want to change any connections then the best thing to do in this case is to always leave the cable box turned on. Otherwise, disconnect the HDMI and connect it to the TV by component video.

How do I connect a Sony DVD DVP-SR210P to a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4240 HDC and a Sylvania TV C320SLX?

I am not sure you can connect your DVD player to your cable box. You should be able to connect both your cable box and DVD player to your TV set with two HDMI cables. This link is a pdf_usecares file of the TV manual that shows how to hook up your dad and cable box.

Hope this helps.

46 inch 1080/ 120 hz hooked up HDTV and cannot turn sound up. Help

Is the TV connected via HDMI to a cable box? If so then if you have a cable box made by Scientific Atlanta you have to go into the settings and look the Digital Audio out settings. If it is set for Dolby Digital the HDMI will have no audio. You will need to put it in the HDMI mode to fix that issue.

How to connect new HD cable box to receiver

HI:
You are using a new HD Cable box, that are using componet video cables for HD, Unfortunetly this receiver does not have componet inputs, so you will just have to run the audio from the televison directly to the receiver by connecting the video out and audio out from the television to the receiver's video Input one. This will require a normal RCA composite cables yellow, red, white. Connect one end of each of the cables to televisions output terminals, and the other to the input one on the receiver. Note: Your TV might have a seperate term called Monitor out, Connect the yellow here, and the red and white to audio out. You can do the same for the DVD but you have to use the same cables,Also the television will not display HD picture this way as this is not a HDTV Receiver. If you just want TV sound to the receiver then do not use the video(Yellow) cable just use the audio out terminals from the tv and connect to Input one on the receiver. you can do this with the cable box also but you have to use RCA type cables . If you want the full HD experience then a new up todate receiver is necessary.

Onkyo HT R510 is broadcasting all digital and 5.1 from the cable box as pcm

Chances are that Time Warner is just plain wrong. That's what you get with free tech supp....oh, uh right. scratch that.

Your receiver seems to be receiving a 2-channel digital audio signal (PCM) from the cable HD box. With this type of input signal, you can't select Dolby Digital on the receiver.

If you have a Scientific Atlanta 8300 (or a closely similar model):
Press [Settings] button on the remote twice. This will open the General Settings menu. Go to "Audio: Digital Out" and the select Dolby Digital (by hitting [-> Move Right]).

If you have another type of cable box, just review the settings menus until you find something relevant to digital audio out and avoid PCM, stereo or "down conversion", but look for Dolby Digital, DTS or "All".

Please keep in mind, that when connecting devices via HDMI cables, your box may decide it's smarter than you and reset the format of the digital audio back to PCM. This is some possibility of this occurring if the cable box or TV is unplugged and plugged back in.

If you have problems, add the cable box make and model and let me know.

Check the setup menu on your TV. Many models require that you choose between using the internal speakers and using the speaker outputs. Sometimes the TV menu choices are "FIXED" (audio output) or "VARIABLE" (internal speakers).

Off Air?

The Scientific Atlanta box was a cable box and recieved CATV signals. The Direct TV box is satellite only. You might check if it has a built in ATSC tuner for off air digital signals. Direct TV in most locations offers the major networks in HD format.
