Inadvertantly deleted ''i8042prt.sys''; keyboard & mouse don't work

Inadvertantly deleted ''i8042prt.sys'' from my laptop because I was trying to get touch screen drivers to re-load so the touch screen would work. I thought that that was the driver because that is all that is on my other touch screen laptop for the mouse driver where the touch screen works. Now I cannot access the keyboard and mouse. I hit F8 and go to Safe Mode command prompt and end up locked up in the Windows XP start up screen. I don't have the original XP disks w/me. Is there anything that I can do now? I tried ''Last configuration, etc.'' and ended up locked up in the same Windows XP screen instead.

Thanks for the answer, but are you suggesting I switch to linux
unubuntu instead of windows xp? I have a Panasonic Toughbook with a
touch screen. It is my understanding that that OS does not have drivers
    for a touch screen.

It is regarding my Logitech MK300 wireless keyboard & mouse combo... Is there a way I can use just the wireless mouse without the keyboard, say with laptop? Right now, they are connected to my desktop...

I think you have to use the combo because each has sensor. trying to use just wireless mouse on a laptop might not work because your laptop cannot read the signal from mouse. Now check if both have bluetooth as that may work.

Sony VAIO PCV-RZ54G PC Desktop keyboard errors in event viewer

The I8042prt.sys is a system function driver found in Microsoft Windows 2000 and later versions for PS/2-style keyboard and mouse devices. If I8042PRT.sys is disabled or missing from the Registry this could be the cause. First check in Device Manager, a black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field appears next to these devices?

See if you can update the driver.

Lets check your registry. Here is the key: HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ i8042prt:Imagepath=System32\Drivers\i8042prt.sys
It should be there can you check to see if it's still there? Here's how:

Click Start > Run > Type: regedit

When Registry editor opens expand local machine> system >CurrentControlSet> Services> (Scroll down till you see i8042prt and click on it.

And tell me what the data entries for Start (should be 1)

Then expand the i8042prt key and select "Parameter" tell me in detail listed for the layer drivers; exactly what you see then select "Enum" Tell me if you see a file name "1" and data: ACPI\PNP0F13\4&1506bb2e&0

We might have to enable or add the port.

I'd suggest running a repair if you have your windows installation disk or do System Restore in Safe Mode, if unable to do it in Normal Mode.

Try tapping F8 at startup, and from the list of startup selections, select Safe Mode by using UP Arrow Key to go there > then hit Enter.

Try a System Restore once there, pick a Restore Point before your problem started (if there's a restore point that goes further back prior to your malware issue I'd suggest that restore point)

Here's how to access system restore:
Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > pick a different time > Next > etc

If that doesn't fix it you might have some viruses and malware.

Start your PC and press F8 several times until the boot menu comes up. Then select "Safe Mode with Networking". Now get some or ALL of the FREE programs below.

Download, Install and Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5756
When Installing choose the non-pro version.

Download, Unzip, Install and Run TDSSKiller:
http://majorgeeks.com/Kaspersky_TDSSKiller_d6895.html

Download, Install and Run Super Anti-Spyware:
http://majorgeeks.com/SUPERAntiSpyware_d5116.html

If you have an outdated Anti-virus program then Download, Install and Run Avira Anti-Virus:
http://majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_Personal_-_FREE_Antivirus_d955.html
Make sure to select ALL of the "threat categories" when you install or configure Avira...

If none of the above works you should seriously think about switching to a USB mouse and USB keyboard. The i8042prt.sys driver is ancient and it only controls PS/2 mice and keyboards (Doesn't affect anything else).

Wireless keyboard and mouse not working after reastart

Just a thought--try this. Go into the device manager and delete all the USB ports. Don't worry--they will be reinstalled on restart. Sounds like there is something having to do with them that is confusing the computer.
Just right-click on My Computer (or Computer in Win 7), choose properties and then click on device manager to get there.

Hi my wireless keyboard & mouse do not work at all on my Acer Aspire M3970, but both a cable keyboard & mouse do?

There is a USB receiver underneath the battery panel of the mouse, although it looks like part of the workings of the mouse. It's only a very small thing with a USB plug on it but it is there. The instructions don't show a picture of it, so it's very easy to think you haven't got one until you look closely

Unclip it and put it in your USB port and it should come up.

I have had exactly the same problem with most laptops I have used in the last 5 years, Compaq, Dell and HP.

what is happening is simple. as you are typing you are inadvertantly skimming the touchpad or the cursor buttons with the base of your thumb - well thats what I was doing - and moving the cursor.

I got an external keyboard & mouse - worked for me!

if there is a setting in the BIOS that enables you to turn OFF the touchpad and / or keyboard cursor buttons when an external KB / MOUSE is connected then enable it otherwise your problem will still continue.

Unfortunately, if youre using the laptop away from base, or there isnt such an option in the bios you basically just have to be more careful!

Try reinstalling the ATI Southbridge Drivers. The AMD website will have a link (it's on the same page as the Catalyst drivers).

You will have to use version 9.3 as the Radeon Xpress series is no longer supported with 9.4 and up.

Trouble installing driver in Windows 98 without original install disks

I would look for the whole driver package from http://www.driverguide.com If you have the files downloaded why are they on the floppy? You can point the installation to any location, including the hard drive of the laptop. Driver guide does require a (free) membership to download, but it's a great site.
