Question about Dell Dimension 9200 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I would like to replace the fan of my Dell Dimension 9200 with a new / different one. Dell germany is asking me for 70 euro for a replacement (not service, just the part) - nice joke I thought. The Dell Dimension (and other models) is using a non-standard connector for the CPU fan. Its a 5Pin connector with 4Pins used. As its using 4Pins, I am confident its a PWM controlled fan. The question left is, which Pin of that fan connector on the Dell Mobo is serving what exactly? Now looking at the original cable connection, Black and Red most likely are GND and +12V, but what about Blue and White? My guesses which I would love to get confirmed: Blue = PWM (aka control), White = RPM (aka sense) If replaced by a generic (but similar specced) PWM fan (e.g. Arctic F12 Pro PWM) and properly rewired according to my guesses like below, will the machine work, will it complain, will it burst in flames? black - black red - red blue - blue white - yellow

None of the supplied documents describe the pin-out / wiring of the fan connector.

Your CPU may be overheating. Open the case, vacuum all the dust and
inspect all fans: Power Supply, CPU, Chipset, Graphic Card etc...
If all are operational then maybe the CPU heatsink compound (grease)
has dried up over times, and need a fresh new replacement.
Download a copy of Real Temp 3.60 and run it continously to monitor
the CPU temperature in real time.

Dimension 9200 wont boot in normal or safe mode. Processor fan is not running

The fan probably went out. Did you hear the fan noise for the last 2-3 weeks while using the unit? That was the fan going out. Buy a new fan @ Best Buys or your local computer store. It may work.
If it doesn't , you may have to replace the Processor and /or the system board.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response.

It is normal to have that but you should try checking if there is a dust on the fan of your computer or try checking on wjat application are you running that makes your computer seems to be racing.

My dell dimention 9200 makes a buzzing noise and no show on monit

Sounds like its just 1 of the fans inside the case needs replacing or possibly the fan inside the power supply. These dont cost much and are easy to replace.

Please check on the power button if the Led is steady amber it requires motherboard replacement. If the light is steady green check the cables in the system that they are connected properly.

How to exchange a super noisy vent inside the Dimension 9200 - where exactly is it mounted? (talking about the main/cpu vent - not GPU or powersupply)

Hi,

The Dimension 9200 is similar to XPS 410. Here is the link to the service manual for the Dim 9200 http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps410/en/index.htm

The image below shows the location of the Proc Fan, which is located at the front behind the Dell logo
