Question about Sony Handycam DCR-HC42 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Open Question

Horizontal gray lines in playback mode

I bought my camera used, it worked fine the first two times then I went to play back mode and could hear the camera running but the screen remained blue. I opened the cassete place and removed the cassette and blew into it to remove any debris. I did this several times. Now the camera plays the tape but I have gray horizontal lines running through the picture. I am thinking its the heads but don't want to purchase anything that might make it worse.

SOURCE: 5 Grey Horizontal Lines across the screen during play back and distorted sound.

Someone here recommended on another post to put the lense cap on & videotape the blackness in a quiet room for 5-10 mins. I tried this as a last resort & it worked. When I played back the tape, no more skipping or gray lines. I had 4-5 SOLID gray lines with skipping video & audio in between on every tape I put in. I think the person who helped me solve this said that it was a result of the tape alignment going off. My camera is a Canon zr80 digital camcorder. (Called Canon, they had me reset it & then recommended sending it in).

On the Sony DCR-TRV320E video camera I get two wide horizontal bands on playback and the audio is intermitant. What is the cause?

Having used a cleaning tape several times to no effect. I then went to record, to see if the bands appeared in recording mode. They didn't. So I went back to playback mode and the bands had disappeared.

Panasonic HVX200 will not play back tape

Your playback heads might be clogged. I am not sure if this camera with give you a RF warning if your record heads get clogged. Also most professional machines drums are rated at 1000 - 1500 hours before they need to be replaced. If you are at 500 and never cleaned the heads it is time to. Run a cleaning tape a few times.

Wide Horizontal lines on playback

Wide bands in the playback video indicate a clogged or defective video head assembly. If your cleaning tape appears to resolve the problem, the heads are getting contaminated. I would not use the same tape in this unit. Try cleaning the heads and then use a brand new tape to avoid clogging the drum assy again. If this does not resolve the problem, the drum assembly will have to be replaced. Hope this helps. Joe Weibel customelectronics.org
