John Deere 185 Hydro will not start

When I go to start the mower, it turns over but will not start. This happened a couple of weeks ago and during the process of trying to start it the engine had a huge backfire. After that we did get it to start but everytime the mower sits for a few days it will not start. We have a new plug and the spark does look good. One time we did try starter fluid but that did not work. After you try for a bit, the engine does sputter but will not start. If you wait a few minutes it will then start. Today it will not start at all. It turns over great but there is no sound like it will start.

You have a bad disk in the starter solenoid pull the starter and go to a shop and buy a new solenoid or flip the disk in the solenoid and sand the two contacts so that it will make contact.

I replaced a bearing and seals in my john deere 185 hydro and put new belt on. Now when I put it in foward it goes in reverse and reverse when it will go forward. What did I do wrong.

Sounds like the lever on top of the transaxle where the rod hooks into was put back on wrong. Take the rod loose, take the nut off , lift the control lever up and rotate it half a turn and put it back down, replace nut and rod and try it.This would reverse the action of the push and pull of the rod.

185 hydro when it is 90 out it will not start but when 70 starts good or after it runs for 10 or 15 min shut off then it won't start

Won't start or won't turn over? If it just won't start check your spark, you could have a faulty ignition coil.
