HI, usually, if the dishwasher dose not drain properly, it will be the fault of a defective or, malfunctioning pump. i will list several problem areas to check. Inspect each area properly and, replace any component that is faulty or fouled.

1. Air gap / Drain hoses
If there is an air gap (located in the sink, near the faucet), check to see if it is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there is anything blocking inside. Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher might not drain properly.

If the drain hose is clogged, the dishwasher would not drain. If there is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher.

Note: If you recently had a garbage disposer installed, it is common to overlook removing the drain plug.

2. Broken belt
Some dishwasher models use a belt to drive the pump. Replace the belt if found broken.

Note: Sometimes the belt would just come off the pump. Even though it might not be broken, it is recommended that you replace the belt, because it is probably too stretched out.

3. Pump
Some models have two impellers inside the pump - one, wash impeller, takes care of the wash cycles, the other, drain impeller, drains the water out. If the drain impeller is broken (broken blades, shaft), the dishwasher would not drain. Replace any broken pump components.

4. Drain solenoid
Some models (for example most GE dishwashers) use a drain solenoid to drain water out. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck, preventing the water from draining out. Try to free up the solenoid. If unsuccessful, you might have to replace the pump assembly.

5. Motor
If the motor is stuck, it is sometimes possible to free it up by manually spinning the motor.

Replace the motor if defective.

6. Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

9-14-14 How do I increase dishwasher pump drain pressure?

Wow, you've really tried hard to fix this problem (and describe what you've tried to do to fix it). But for me to be able to fix it, I need to know the model number, and approximately how old the dishwasher is. Does this model use a separate drain motor, or does it have just one motor and a diverter powered by a solenoid to drain the water?

GE Dishwasher Model GSD900X-02 drain pressure problem

Wow, good job looking at all the possibilities. I have to ask, since you already bought the pump did you try it? Put the new pump in? Some machines like washing machines use a transmission, it is possible that the pump is sufficient for one function and not another. For what it is worth the first thing I would do is try the new pump. I know it was probably expensive and if it is not the problem you might want to return it but as you have discovered there are not many parts on the machine to fail. Most likely it is the pump or the valves and cillinoyds the pump moves water through like you have already surmised. If you do not wish to install the new on you might be able to uninstall the old one and see what it looks like running dry for just one second. my guess if it is not strong enough to pump the water 12" and a 12" water coulomb is only .5 Lbs (1/2 of a lb.) then there definitely is not enough head pressure on the pump and like you said it would have to be a leak or an open valve (the pump should produce at least 15 to 30 psi, city water pressure in many cites is 35 to 80 psig) so I would go for it, replace the pump. Good Luck.

I have a whirlpool Adp8540 that seems to go through the wash cycle completely but when we open it up the water has not gone through the spraying arms and the soap is a solid mass at the bottom of the...

It is likely the water circulation system is faulty. This dishwasher uses a single motor to run the water pump and the drain pump. If you hear the wash pump operate during wash cycle then it is likely there is a blockage in the water circulation manifold which distributes the water through the arms.

If you do not hear the pump operate during wash cycle then the sensor is faulty. The sensor tells dishwasher to switch to drain cycle from wash cycle.

Try following the diagrams at top of this website to get idea of parts.

Dishes are always dirty, maybe even dirtier after running dishwasher. has hot water, lower arm moves.

Check the outlet holes on both spray arms for clogs. If necessary, remove the spray arms, clean out the holes and empty out any debris inside the spray arms. Verify that the upper arm is turning also.

If the machine does not drain completely at the end of the cycle, the pump drain outlet is partially blocked and you are retaining dirty water for the next load.

You may have a chemistry problem - inferior soap, empty rinse agent dispenser, or extremely hard water.

Improper arrangement of the dishes can prevent some from being washed. Make sure no dish blocks the spray to another.

DW doesn't pump out. Pump doesn't come on. There

If the water doesn't drain from your dishwasher, check these:
  1. Drain line/air gap--A clog in this part is the usual reason that a dishwasher doesn't drain. Remove the drain line to clear any debris from the hose or hose connection at the household drain line connection. Reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher again.
  2. Pump--You can reach the pump from inside the dishwasher. Remove the lower rack, spray arm and support. Look for an impeller, a device that spins around and forces water through the spray arm. This is the wash impeller and beneath it is the drain impeller that pushes the water into the drain port. Replace it if found defective or worn out.
  3. Drain valve/solenoid---The drain valve may have a solenoid with lever that sticks or frozen and prevents the dishwasher from draining. Free up the solenoid and lubricate the lever.
  4. Belt---A certain brand of dishwasher uses a belt to drive the pump. Replace it if broken or worn out.
  5. Motor---Check it if turning or working.Turn the rotor manually to see if stuck and free it up. Replace if defective, it is not serviceable.

Detergent dispenser doesn't empty completely

The detergent reservoir should pop open allowing the wash water to "wash" the detergent clean. It sounds like your DW is not "spraying" with full force. From your description, it sounds like your water pump is malfunctioning OR your drain is clogged with food and the water flow is restricted, because the wash water is the original rinse water from the first cycle and it recirculates. Check and make certain your drain is not clogged before you call the repairman or replace the machine.

Water won't go out of the dishwasher

Begin at your sink drain that the dishwasher drain hose connects to. Disconnect the hose and check both directions for anything plugging the connection.
Make sure the drain hose has not become "kinked"
(After you have emptied the water from the dishwasher) remove the lower spray arm and the filter in the sump area. Look for obstructions and remove all debris. Rinse the filter thoroughly and reassemble.
If you dishwasher has a timer on the front of the dishwasher that you can manually turn, start a quick cycle with no DW soap and empty.
Allow the water to run in for several seconds and then manually (slowly, gently) turn the timer knob until the DW should begin draining the DW. Listen closely for the sound of the pump motor running. Is water properly draining out of the dishwasher into the drain?
After you have done these things, please post back here and we can take the next steps. OK?

Dishes not getting clean

Yes I had the same problem and just fixed it for $7.00. Did not even had to take anything apart. This is what you will have to do. If this dosen't work then try what these experts are suggesting. Please follow these steps for optimal results. #1 Break off a plastic Tea spoon. #2 Put it in place of a LATCH to by pass so you can watch the operation of the dishwasher.(put down some towels for water spill) #3 start the dishwasher on normal cycle. #4 Pour in Gallon of White Vinegar($2.00) while the Dishwasher is being filled. #5 Let it run through its cycle. After the cycle is complete water will drain out and then actual cleaning cycle will start. Then #6 while the dishwasher is being filled again pour in 48 OZ or bigger bottle of CLR (Calciam Lime Rust) it is available at Meijer, walmart, Rite Aid, Home Depot Ace Menard's etc. for $5.00. sit by the dishwasher and listen for it. if you hear water draining pull and push the water plunger so it won't drain so you don't loose your CLR down the drain. since you have the spoon in the LATCH your dishwasher will always be on so BE CAREFUL when you stick your hand in it. And after the cycle is complete enjoy your NEW DISHWASHER.
Thanks
