Try reseating the memory one stick at a time in each slot at a time and try turning on the computer after each stick reinsertion.

For some reason Dell doesn't suggest one obvious alternative: the DIMM slots on the motherboard are dirty and not making good contact, so clean them. That's what worked for me (on my ancient Dimension E310).

I cleaned the sockets by spraying TV contact cleaner into them (after removing and draining power to remove the DIMMs of course) and inserting/fully-seating/unclipping/removing/rinse&repeat DIMMs 5-10 times. Then when I put everything back together it all worked!

(Every spray can of TV Contact Cleaner I've ever seen came with a red tube taped to the side. One end of that red tube just fits into the hole in the spray button on the top of the can, and the other end directs all the solvent right into the DIMM slot rather than spraying it all over the inside of the computer. I tried not to make too much of a mess ...but I didn't worry about the inevitable drips.)

If 1 & 2 are off ... then you have problems.

Memory modules are detected, but a memory failure has occurred.

  • If you have one memory module installed, reinstall it and restart the computer. (see Memory for instructions on how to remove and install memory modules.)
  • If you have two or more memory modules installed, remove the modules, reinstall one module, and then restart the computer. If the computer starts normally, reinstall an additional module. Continue until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without error.
  • If available, install properly working memory of the same type into your computer.
  • If the problem persists, contact Dell (see Contacting Dell).

According to Dell's notes:

Their remedies are:
  • If you have one memory module installed, reinstall it and restart the computer. (see Memory for instructions on how to remove and install memory modules.)
  • If you have two or more memory modules installed, remove the modules, reinstall one module, and then restart the computer. If the computer starts normally, reinstall an additional module. Continue until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without error.

In the meantime, see if there is an unused KNOWN to be working computer; that you can borrow the Power Supply from temporarily.
DON'T install it yet.

My GX520 pwr light is green, on the board is an amber Led, the somputer boots up, it goes the full process, until the arrow appears on the monitor. no Iconn are displayed on the desktop

If your computer gets to that stage, then I would guess you have an OS ( Operating System ) problem. Try booting from your XP installation CD. If that works then you may have to re-install Windows.

Sounds like you may have multiple problems. Suggest trying to eliminate possible causes by removing components. Remove any PCI cards like modem, video card, sound card, etc... Remove the memory modules and disconnect cables to CD/DVD drives. Look at the USB ports to see if any are damaged. Remove the components one at a time and see if the LED's change.

Hello,

Yes there is. You will need to boot your pc into safe mode or VGA mode depending on the operating system. To do this when the computer boots up after the initial bios screen hit f8 and you will be prompted to boot into windows normally or safemode and some other options. Boot into safemode and place your video card at the lowest setings. Also you can update your drivers from here.

If you have windows 7 you have more options to play with on the f8 boot menu, they are pretty self explanatory but you may need to enter advanced options.

If still nothing please write me back and we can go from there.

If my answer helped you today please give four thumbs up as thanks!

Unable to upgrade onboard graphics on dell gx520

Try disabling your onboard graphics in the BIOS. Some BIOS allow this. If you have a sound card, disable the onboard sound too. Count your beeps. they contain a code. Go online and "Google" bios codes. This should give you a starting point to diagnose the problem.
