You didn't say which operating system. But this usually happens in XP. You have a corrupt start up file.The easiest way to fix this is to boot the machine from an XP cd. When it asks you if you want to install windows click enter. Hopefully it will show that there is an existing copy of windows. Then it will tell you to hit R if you want to repair the existing copy of windows. If you have succeeded this far it is pretty much automatic after that. The repair install will ask for the product code (on the MS COA sticker) Hope this helps!

Hi,

The above error refers to Corruption/Deletion of the Windows Basic File.

The only way is to reinstall the Windows or Search for the above mentioned file.Add to the Window's directory and run.

To be really Honest, the second one would not a recommend option as it will add the frustration and time consuming to search for few files out of billions.

Any further help, let me know.

Thanks for using "Fixya".

Error prompt: \WINDOWS\system32\c_437.nls

you have a windows system file corruption on the c_437.nls file which is a national languages file required by windows to run.

repair this problem following these instructions-

1. Boot your computer from your Windows installation CD- ie-insert the CD and restart your computer.
2. Select 'R' for the recovery console and log on as administrator.
3. At the command prompt type the following:
cd system32
then press enter
4. Then type the following:
ren c_437.nls c_437.old
then press enter
4. Then type the following:
EXPAND D:\I386\c_437.nl_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\c_437.nls
then press enter

(If your CD drive is different than D: or your primary hard
drive/partition is other than C:, substitute the appropriate
drive letters.)
4. Select yes when you're prompted to overwrite the existing file.
5. Reboot the computer.

Depending on the level of file corruption, you may have to repeat this
process for additional files. To do this follow the instructions above substituting the file name.

I have an asus eeepc 900. i have an error message

hi charmed4031this netbook comes with an internal harddisk on which windows is installed but lacks any optical drives so far.
You will have to get an external CD/DVD-drive plus a Windows-CD for it from which you safely can reinstall windows or replace the missing file. Please find out which windows version you are using(Win200, Win XP Home for e.g.,), lend or buy this external drive, connect devices and let the computer work it's magic, if still facing diffifculties, you know where to find us ;-)

See if you can download it from Microsoft. It seems to be related to the languge translators in Windows (NLS file).

Turn on computer- Wont boot Please Help!!!

Borrow an XP install disk from anyone. Since you are not installing a new copy you don't need a keycode or serial number.

I am willing to bet however that you are going to need to do a re-install having lost this file to corruption. The source of the corruption is the unseen elephant in the room. Be aware that if you can get the computer running move any personal files to new new folder on the C drive. One that you create and not in 'My Documents' or any other windows created folder. When re-installing windows any/all windows folders are deleted and new, empty ones are created resulting in your loss of everything.

1. Boot the laptop;
2. press F12 to go to boot menu;
3. Selected CD/DVD-RW Drive;
4. Press any key to boot to CD; worked fine...
5. Press R to repair;
6. At the recovery console, selected 1: C:\WINDOWS and hit enter;
7. This brought me to C:\WINDOWS> prompt;
8. Typed this C:\WINDOWS> EXPAND -R D:\I386\c_437.nl_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\c_437.nls

type exit

9. And got the error message: The parameter is not valid. Try /? for help.

IF the disk is in the D drive then use this command instead: expand d:\i386\c_437.nl_ c:\windows\system32\

Try running the repair console from the CD.. fixboot, Fixmbr, And chkdsk /p may repair the missing or corrupt file other wise you can replace/install the missing file with another good working system and put the drive in an external enclosure.
Good luck!
