Problem for Sony KV-32S42 32" TV

Ive had this sony tv for a couple years now. it used to be a great tv. lately, it has taken longer and longer for the screen to turn on. now, when i turn the tv on, i get sound, but the stand by L.E.D. just blinks and blinks. no picture. after 5-10 minutes, the screen might kick on, but that also keeps blinking.
ive seen some of the other posts. most of the answers were to take it to a repair shop. but i'd like to try and fix it myself if possible. what could be wrong (please clarify, im new to tv fixing) and how much would it cost to repair at a shop?

- would it be one of the two knobs on the piece where the red wire that goes to the tube is? one knob is marked with white paint. ive tried both and nothing happensJun 23, 2009

It may be a fruitless effort. The main reason this occurs is that the Picture Tube is drawing too much current and the AKB circuit will not let the video circuit diplay the picture. Outside
of replacing the Picture Tube there is no fix.
You can varify this by turning the screen control up. This is usaully located on the HV transformer and is marked. the other location it may be is on the CRT board. It also would be clearly marked. If you adjust this slightly and the picture appears, the Picture Tube is the problem. I'm betting 100% it's the Tube.

- It is the bottom knob on the HV Transformer. Turning it clockwise and seeing if the CRT face lights or flashes. If the CRT has a bad enough short in it, it may not light up at all. But I am still betting it is the CRT.Yes
