Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold
air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and
fridge. Make sure the damper is open.
Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the
back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. Light frost everywhere(NORMAL)
or a partial pattern of ice(LOW ON FREON) or nothing(LOW FREON OR COMPRESSOR
Not all refrigerators are insulated the same and not all
condensers are in the same place. Your cold control is monitoring the
temperature of the refrigerator section and is designed to turn off the
compressor to keep things from freezing in that section. If it stays cold long
enough outside in your garage the cold control thinks its cold enough and won't
turn the compressor on. A makeshift closet to hold a little heat the unit
generates will probably help.
How long before it goes from cold to hot. The compressor could be not running and going out on overload. The condeser fan could have failed. Did you check the outdoor unit. Is it running? Is the fan running on the outdoor unit. It could be low on charge which would cause ice. Are you getting excessive condensation? Let me know and i can help you out more. Grab the large copper line outside that is insulated and tell me if it is cold. It should be cold like a Pepsi out of the fridge!
Just additional clues..(general). The defrost timers (on non-electronic) usually located at the bottom (underneath), have a tendency to fail. (One of mine is in the center, one was on the left side) There are usually about 5 wires connected to it. If it fails while defrosting.. the fridge will warm quickly and stop cooling, if it fails in cooling mode, you will have the icing up problem. (other) A squealing noise is usually a fan motor. -also- (Freon issues)..as freon is lost from a small leak, first the freezer will actually get colder, but the refrigerator section may be too warm (I know it sound stupid). When enough is lost the compressor will get hot and the fridge will not cool.
You may have a low freon condition in the fridge section. Look to see if you have an ice block building up on the rear wall towards the lower left side. If so, you are low on freon and the ost likely culprit is a leaking evaporater. The best way to tell if you are low on freon for sure is to take out all the shelves, remove the light cover, then the 2 screws holding the fan cover, and then remove the back wall. You wont be able to pull it all the way out cause the cold control is attached to it for the freezer and fridge so be careful. Turn the fridge control all the way up to 10 and wait till the compressor is running. you can tell if the compressor is running by pushing in the little switch on the top of the door frame and seeing if the fan runs(one switch is for lights, the other for fan) if it runs the compressor is on. anyway watch the coils and see if they develop frost all the way from top to bottom. If they dont you are low on freon and are ooking at about a $600 repair. if it does frost all the way you may have a bad cold control or a stalling fan motor up by the condensor on top. The best way to tell this is the next time the fridge feels warm, sheck the frame around the door seal and see if it is hot to the touch. If it is you almost surley have a bad condensor fan motor.
