Cables and brackets do rust and break. But being a year old would not be the case, even for salt water. I would thoroughly inspect entire system. Take lots of pictures as to why it broke. You may need them later on.

Hi, they have two spline connected drive shafts between the motor and impellor, these splines will be worn and stripped. Both shafts will need to be replaced. Regards Phil.
