Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console
The new drive plays music cds and dvds just not xbox 360 games
Every DVD drive is "married" to the motherboard. They both have a special key that keeps them together. Without that key the motherboard will not accept the DVD drive and it won't be able to play games ever again. You can extract the key from you old DVD drive and "spoof" it to the new one. That's the only way it'll work.

I would call 1-800-4MYXBOX and tell them the problems youre having with what is a relatively new machine.
Xbox realized that the consoles were peppered with problems like this and extended the warranty from one year to three.

Your laser either needs to be cleaned or is going bad. I have seen this many times before. Try taking the drive apart and cleaning the laser aperture with 91% alcohol and a cotton swab (carefully). If that doesn't work then you need to replace the laser (or get a new drive).
