Unless you have someone who can do this for you locally, the Geek Squad is very handy.

SOURCE: problem with a disk read error

There are a couple of possibilities.

1. The hard drive is defective.

2. The operating system is corrupt.

The easiest way to test this is to run the restore cd that came with the computer to reload Windows.

If you get this error while running the restore cd then you will need to get a new hard drive.

You most likely have a faulty hard drive, especially if it is making a clicking sound.
You wil need to purchase a new hard drive and install Windows again with the Toshiba Recovery CD.

Your hard drive is failing/failed. A reputable repair person should be able to remove the drive and slave it to another computer. Then if it will come on as a slave, he/she can get the data off. If it's dead as a slave then a professional recovery is the only way to recover data. In any case you're going to need a new hard drive.

Good Luck

My toshiba satellite a305 s6864, it is running windows vista home premium 64 bits the whole system is getting to freezed states instantly. I can't move my mouse, nor the keyboards responds. I...

I would start by entering the bios using the method below. Try running a hardware scan. It sounds like you could just have a hard drive that is going bad.
F2 key method Turn the computer on. If you see an invitation to press the F2 key to enter Setup, do so. The Setup screen will appear.
Toshiba Hardware utility method Run the Toshiba Hardware utility from the Toshiba Console. It may also accessible (as 'HWSetup') from the Windows Control Panel. Changes to some of the settings will require re-starting the computer. This method is the only way to access the BIOS settings on some notebook PCs (Satellite 5000 series, for example). (For these machines, pressing and holding the F12 key immediately after powering-on the notebook will allow you to alter the notebook's boot priority.)

If the Toshiba Hardware utility is not present, try the F2 key method and the Esc key method (see below). The Toshiba Hardware utility may be downloaded from the Toshiba support website at http://support.toshiba.com
If the computer is fully off, and/or to avoid having to re-start it (and Windows), use one or the other of the following two methods. The PC will have to be truly off (not suspended, or in standby mode, or in hibernation mode). If an external keyboard is attached to the notebook (either directly or via a docking station or a port-replicator), disconnect it until you have completed this procedure.
Esc key method Turn the computer on. If you do not see a prompt to press the F2 key, then immediately press and hold the Esc key for three seconds, and then release it. When prompted to, press the F1 key. The Setup screen will appear.
For Toshiba notebook PCs manufactured before the introduction of Windows XP One or more of the following methods are appropriate:
HWSetup method Run the HWSetup utility from the Windows Control Panel. This utility provides a relatively user-friendly way to change the BIOS settings. Changes to some of the settings will require re-starting the PC (and Windows). HWSetup was pre-installed on all but early Toshiba notebook models. If it doesn't appear as a Control Panel applet on your computer, you may be able to download it from the Toshiba Support website as part of the Toshiba Utilities package for your model.
Esc key method If an external keyboard is attached to the notebook, either directly or via a docking station or a port-replicator, disconnect it. Turn the computer on. Immediately press and hold the Esc key for three seconds, and then release it. When prompted to, press the F1 key. The Setup screen will appear. The PC will have to be truly off (not suspended, or in standby mode, or in hibernation mode) for this method to work.

Cant restore to factory settings tried 0,f1 and f8 none work

When your Toshiba Satellite laptop goes on the fritz, there are several instances where the best solution is to delete everything and start over. If your system frequently crashes or you can't remove a specific virus, you may want to restore the laptop back to original factory settings. While the easiest way to restore the system is to use the operating system restore disc, it is possible to restore the system without it. Each Satellite laptop also includes a hard drive recovery utility that lets you restore the operating system without the restore disc.

1. Take account of any files or programs you still want to use after the Toshiba laptop is restored back to its factory settings. Transfer the files to a backup location, such as a USB flash drive or external hard drive.

2. Restart the Toshiba Satellite laptop's operating system. Wait for the Toshiba logo to appear on the screen.

3. Press the key that brings up the hard drive disk utility menu. Depending on the specific model of your Toshiba Satellite laptop, the key will either be "0," "F1," or "F8."

4. Press "1" or click "Restore Original Factory Image." Click "Yes." Select "Next" to begin the restoration process.

5. Restart the Toshiba laptop computer when the restoration process finishes running. Follow the prompts that appear on the screen to set up the laptop's date, time and language settings.

6. Transfer the backup copies of the data you saved earlier back to the Toshiba's hard drive. Re-install any programs you need, such as your software firewall or anti-virus tool.

I hope you find it very helpful. Thank you for using fixya.com

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite A305-S6916 from a guy, he gave me some codes to it, but not a password. I don't have it and how can I unlock the laptop?

If the system has a start up password and you do not have it you will need to contact Toshiba. The information you are looking for is not public to help protect against laptop theft. If the laptop is not reported as stolen, Toshiba will unlock it for a fee.

Good luck, Jim

How to reset to factory settings a toshiba satellite A305-S6829 with Vista ? (pressing 0, or F8 didn't bring me far!

To access the Toshiba recovery partition, power off the laptop. Hold down the 0 (zero) key and turn the laptop on. Keep holding down the zero key until the TOSHIBA logo appears, where you should start tapping the zero key repeatedly. Stop if the unit beeps or when the TOSHIBA logo disappears. The screen should flash ** HDD RECOVERY MODE ** for a split second, then load the Toshiba recovery program right from the hard drive.

Note that this erases all data, and reloads all factory default software. Be sure to back up all your important personal data beforehand!
