I have a lazy boy tiller with chaine drive, its liked locked up. it will not engage, any help please ! it does have aplace to put oil on the side of the chine drive house. what kind of oil would it take? may be 90waite.thanks, cobraman

The gear box can be removed, reset and resealed using gasket magic. It is not a quick fix and during this process I also replaced the tine shaft seals as I had lubricant leaking from the gear-box to the tine shaft. When you are tilling you should avoid rocky areas. It iseems sudden tension due to bouncing is what knocks the chain loose.

DO NOT remove the belt pulley from the top of the gear box. It is unecessary. You must remove the entire assembly from the rear of the machine. It is set in place by 6 bolts and come off as a whole unit. Once it is removed then undo the three bolts and spacers that hold the case in place. Remove the case from the frame by sliding it out the open end. You will have to remove all of the bolts around the outside of the case; a cordless drill really comes in handy here. Lay the case on its side, as you remove the bolts you may experience lubricant dripping from the centers of the removed bolt holes, or at the center holes where the case connected to the frame. This is not a problem as you will need to replace the 90 weight lubricant after you have resealed the case anyway. Once you have removed all of the bolts, using a flathead screwdriver and a mallet or hammer. break the seal around the outside of the case. You may have to go around a few times, but eventually it will pull apart revealing the sprockets, bound chain and remaining lubricant. Since it is open this is an ideal time to check for wear on sprockets and remove any large debris from the case. reset the chain so that the tine shaft moves freely and the corresponding sprockets spin as you move the tine shaft. Using a gasket sealant (Gasket Magic**) put a thick bead of sealant in the center of flat outside edge where the two sides of the case come together. Add a little extra around bolt holes. Replace the two covers snugly together and begin finger-tightening the bolts back into the crank case. Once you have completed this task, go back over the bolts and tighten with a hand wrench. Once the case is back together allow 45m to an hour for the sealant to completly harden before introducing lubricant to the system. Then reattach the case to the rear assembly and then put your tiller back together.

This occurrence seams to be an issue with these machines, however the problem is avoidable as it is persistant use in rocky or hard ground areas which causes causes the system to jump and bind. If you happen upon a hard patch of earth or rocky area, go slow, do not force the tiller and remove any large debris when possible before tilling.

    I am working on a tiller for my father-in-law. He says that one side of the tines won't turn. I have disassembled everything except the 2 inside tines. I can't seem to get them off to pull the case apart. I've used a wheel puller with no luck so far. Any suggestions?

I also have a lazy box 5HP front tine tiller mfg by Parma Tool co with the tines locked up. What I found out was the chain drive which is enclosed in the transmisson case had come off one of the sprockets an caused the tines to lock up. There is no way to access the chain or sprockets as they are enclosed in a sealed case. I am trying to find out if a replacement transmission case is still available. sorry I cant help with this.

I have a lazy boy front tine garden tiller. i want to have the proper amount of 90 wt gear oil in the transmission. I can see one hole with a plug that says gear oil. Do i fill the gear box up to that...


ITs not really a lazy boy brand is it? If we a re talking about garden tillers... then if the fill hole is on top the oil level should be about 1 ( one) inch below the hole. If the hole is on the side of the gear case then it is a peep hole and should be filled till fluid runs out.

Hi Yard Machines rear tiller looks like 216-430-000 but no numbers on mine. was running tilling fine when all of a sudden tines stopped spinning. When shifting to till feels like no positive engagement....


There is a SHEAR pin that could also be broken. It's there to protect the sprocket from breaking in the event of hitting a rock or something large while tilling. You will have to go to the MTD website who makes Yard Machines, to get the directions on changing the pin or the chain whatever the case may be.

The motor drives a belt, and the belt drives a pulley that causes a chain to drive the tines (blades). For the belt to drive the tines, an idler pulley has to put tension on the belt. This is moved into position by a lever that pulls the pulley into tension on the belt, and tension is maintained with a spring when the lever is locked into place.
1. Make sure that the tines will rotate with the belt off. If there is difficulty, check for debris holding the tines (roots, etc.). If necessary, remove the cap covering the chain cover inspection port, and with the machine tilted back, observe for proper operation of the chain while moving the tines by hand. Lubricate the chain according to your manual. If your chain is not working properly, disassemble down to the chain case, and inspect the chain and sprockets. Chain is radily at places like Motion Industries, WW Grangier, or a bicycle shop. Often overlooked, check that the pulley set screws are tight, and causing the shaft attached to it to actually rotate. Check the pins and locking cotter pins in the tines, make sure that they are pinned to the shaft.
2. Check the belt. An old belt can stretch to the point where it will no longer work. The "V" belt can also wear down to where insufficient friction can be applied to the driving or the driven pulleys to cause it to rotate.
3. Check the condition of the idler pulley and spring. Make sure that the lever places tension on the belt. It should be somewhat difficult to engage the idler pulley when the belt is new. You may have an adjustor on the idler that will tighten the belt.

I have a cub cadet model 21ab455c756 tiller. Worked fine when put away 3mos ago. Today... tines appear locked up. Wont turn. Gear selector lever clicks freely thru the different speeds/options. When trying...


Hi, I'm Peter I would first tilt the tiller up and put some kind of blocking up it to hold the rear end up so you can access the tines. It sounds like you may have debris, vines, string, wire, etc wraped up around and in your tines. This is very common and the best way I have found to remove this mess is with a good pair of side cutters, ( Dikes ) and a pair of needle nose and pliers to grab the bits and pieces as you cut them out. Becareful not to let the tiller fall on you or your hand slip hitting the tines or other sharp metal and wire that may be in the mess. If once all that is cleared and you still are having problems then I will post this from one of my previous post. I hope it isn't this serious as it sounds like you have a new tiller. If not and it's second hand then this added information may be helpful.
Hi I'm Peter. I realize this is an old post but I will answer it anyway for anyone that has the same question. I just finished rebuilding a Cub Cadet RT 65 Transmission. There are a couple of problems you may be facing. First the shifting shaft that goes down into the transmission is not sealed verywell so my understanding is that water from rain or washing the unit may run down into transmission. and may rust up some parts. You can try spraying penetrating oil and moving it back and forth and you may free it up. I am doubtful though but it's worth a try. The shaft has an arm with a little shaft on it that slides in the grove of a shifting yoke. The shift yoke is mounted on a shaft that has detent groves in it. The yoke has a stiff spring and ball in it that when you shift the transmission it slides up and down to the various groves of which each is either neutral or one of the drive or drive and tiller engagement positions. If your unit is like a few I've seen they have been packed with grease and the little ball and spring cannot get lubrication so they wind up freazing up makeing it near or impossible to move the yoke up and down which fits around the shaft of the primary shift gears that move up and down with the yoke. As they move up and down they will engage the transmission the the various modes of travel and operation. There are other problems also as several of the gears in the transmission have needle bearings so if your unit has only grease in it and not a type of gear oil the needle bearings have no way for the grease to get to them so they destroy themselves which may lead to a catistrphic failure which may include gear teeth being broken off and locking up the transmission. Needless to say the transmission case will have to be split and all new bearings installed plus replacing any other damaged gears, chains, , etc. You can order the bearings from multiple places Cub Cadet of course or you may do as I did and go to Mader bearing or what ever local bearing supply shop in your area and buy new ones. Remember take the old ones with you so they can match up the ones for your particular unit. I can tell you some of the parts/gears are used in most of the same size tillers of nearly all of the major brands. Yep Troybilt, Cub Cadet, Ryobi, Craftsman so there may be minor differences but I'm beginning to suspect as with a lot of appliances today that there is one company that builds them and sells them to the different Name Brands to put their logos on or either they just get their parts from the same place. LOL. There are a couple of videos on you tube that a fellow has taken his apart and filled it with grease. I haven't found it yet in my manuals but from all my years as a mechanic most transmissions have some type of gear oil in them and not grease hence the needle bearing getting destroyed.. I have read references that say that the Cub Cadets at Tractor Supply come with oil in them then people have said they read to put grease in the transmissions when they get low on oil because a seal leaked. What ever ! I say replace the seal and make the necessary changes if any need to be made so that you can run gear oil in them. The oil can reach the needle bearings and give them a longer life as the grease is unable to reach them. There are several sources I believe even Cub Cadet offers a free download of the Owners Manual and a parts manual with a breakdown of the transmission including parts numbers.I replaced all the seals and bearings in mine for maybe $60 and a gear that is universal to all of the tillers for around $80. Prices can vary a lot so shop around. The same gear can be had from $ 79.99 - $ 129.00. They even all use the same parts number between the major brands. The drawing in the parts Manual is very confusing so to help everyone out I put a video on you tube Cub Cadet RT 65 Tiller where I have a cleaned transmission with all the gears in the case and I take the out, show you their positions, explain the operation of the transmission and then show how to assemble the gears in their proper place. I also explain and show the detent shaft and shifting yoke operation. Tiller goes For./Rev. but wont drive forward with tines engaged


check the sher bolt on the tine to drive shaft. ill need model and ser number off the unit before i can go further with helping you thy changed them around a lot

You will need to split the gear case if iam not mistaken it has chain drine the chain links break and you have to replace them
