Question about KitchenAid KSCS25FKSS Side by Side Refrigerator

Mullion strip between doors gets too hot!

I have had this same problem 2x since purchase in 2004. The motor for the condensate unit is no good and should be replaced. I reported this problem to KitchenAid and only received a generic sorry for your trouble letter & that no one else is reporting the issue. I am really disappointed with my KitchenAid refridgerator purchase. Besides the motor referenced, the ice make motor went out 2x. Now we have an intermittant clicking noise. Additionally, the cheap plastic pieces inside have broke as well. I would not recommend another purchase of a KitchenAid.

Why doesn't the mullion heater snap back after I open the door?

Hello Al;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

All is good. Your Mullion heater snaps back when you open the door because it is spring loaded. When you close the door the springs ensure that the mullion is flush and tight against the front of your unit.
The purpose of the mullion heater is to provide low heat to eliminate any moisture (condensate) created by the warm air in the room.

Hot door seal, rail, divider strip between refrigerator and freezer.

If the mullion (rail between the fresh food section and the freezer section) on your refrigerator is hotter than normal this tip will help identify and remedy the issue hopefully before it gets to the point of loosing the cooling.

Refrigerated surfaces will attract moisture, especially in the warmer more humid areas and times of year. Since the refrigerator and freezer are cold moisture can accumulate near the door from normal use, this moisture can get into the door seals and cause them to not seal properly, mold and otherwise cause a nuisance.

Why Hot:
To keep the moisture from accumulating on this surface the refrigerator manufactures have run part of the hot condenser tubing inside the cabinet close to that rail, under normal running circumstances this rail will be slightly above room temperature and the amount of heat not noticeable. The condenser is the set of coils that are on the back or bottom of the refrigerator and disperse the heat from the unit. If the condenser is very dirty or the fan that keeps the condenser cool is not running then the condenser coils and thus the mullion (rail) gets very hot and overheats. This heat will eventually cause the compressor to work harder and possibly overheat and turn off occasionally to cool itself. This will lead to reduced cooling in the freezer and refrigerator.

Fix: If the coils are under the refrigerator, pull the front grille off of the bottom, check if you feel air coming out, if not then the fan is not running, look for dust and dirt build up on the coils, clean with a brush and vacuum, do not be afraid to get aggressive with the brush. If the fan is not running you will need to go to the back of the refrigerator and unplug the power cord. Remove the back panel off the bottom and you should see the fan. It may have some dust or other debris blocking the fan blade from turning. If so clean that out very good, clean the coils from the back if accessible also. Be sure to put the back panel on as it is there to direct the air flow across the compressor and coils, without that panel the condenser will overheat.

If the fan does not run after cleaning it you will need to replace the fan motor, it is a common part that should be available at most retail appliance part dealers. Just be sure to get your model and serial number before calling.

What does it mean when the section between the freezer and refrigerator on a side by side unit is hot to the touch?

It means the mullion heater is working. The strip between the doors is called the "Mullion" on "Kitchen Aid" this is part of the refrigeration system. Known as a "Yoder Loop".

The black strip down the middle of the fridge ( between the fridge and freezer) is VERY hot to touch..for about 2 days. just for the record our ice machine hasnt worked for a year..I dont know if they are...

check you condenser fan motor to see if there something jammed in fan or if it just quit running, remove back panel to acces fan motor, that would cause that center mullion to get very hot

Cabinet flanges and mullion very hot to the touch and not cooling at all, model ed25qf

turn your frig off as soon as possible! this is an easy fix but if it goes to long it can cause permanent damage to the compressor and then you have a huge repair bill, or a big piece of trash :(

What has happened is this:

There is a fan called the condenser fan that blows air across the compressor to keep it cool. This fan has stopped working for some reason and now the compressor is VERY hot. When this happens it stops running and you get zero cold produced.

The reason the mullion is hot is because there is tubing connected to the compressor that is run through this area for condensation prevention purposes. When the condenser fan stops working, this tubing gets much hotter than normal, and that is what you are feeling.

So, replace the condenser fan motor before the compressor gets to hot that it damages itself! If I can be of further help please let me know, good luck friend!

Center strip between doors on kitchenaid kscs25inbt00 gets hot. I replaced the compressor fan motor and saw that it spins 3 or 4 times when fridge is plugged in, but it wont come on again no matter how hot...

That heat strip is in all refrigerators that don't want condensation rusting them out. It's called a mullion heater and there are several of them around the door.

Find the defrost timer and advance it a few clicks and the compressor should come on. If it doesn't let us know what happened.

And if your fridge has an Economy switch, it is there so you can turn the mullion heaters off.

Hot center strip

when the center mullion is hot then it means your units condensor fan motor is out. the fan is located by the compressor. this fan keeps the condensor coils cooled off. if the fan is not running then the unit vents through the cabinet.

The middle divider heats up

Yes it is normal. Old side by sides had an electric heater through that strip known as the mullion that you could turn off with the "energy saver" switch. Not any more... it is now that last pass of the condenser that runs around the door to prevent moisture build up. The more load on the sealed system, the hotter the mullion. If it gets almost too hot to touch, clean the condenser coils as they are probably getting plugged with lint and can't evacuate heat anymore... cooling will suffer too if that's the case not to mention higher energy consumption.

Fridge is getting hot in between the doors

This is called a mullion heater and is perfectly normal as this heater prevents the area between the doors from freezing. No danger at all.
