GE refrigerator/freezer - defrost noise

I have a GE refrigerator, model GDS20SCSBSS, with a noise problem. I believe the noise comes from the frost free freezer. It has the freezer compartment on the bottom. No icemaker or water dispenser. The frost free feature comes on about every hour or so. When it was new it was very quiet at melting accumulated ice. It's a little over a year old now. A week or two ago it started making a loud noise similar to a electric alarm clock whenever it melts the ice build up.

Everything else about the refrigerator works fine. How can I shut this thing up, or at least quiet it down?

Blow it clean or check for loose bolts or broke springs.

SOURCE: frost in freezer compartment

It is possible to get this build up in the return vents.  Check seals for any possiblilty of warm air getting into the fridge.  Warm air getting in will cause this.  For now use a hair dryer or some hot water to clear the vents.  Let me know what you find.  Would appreciate a solved rating for expert advice.

sounds like the defrost thermostat or you may have a crack in the water line causing the freezing.

SOURCE: Icemaker seems to partially melt ice while it is being stored

The number one cause of this is the door is not sealing correctly. Check that the door closes and seals as it should.

We have a GE 22.2 Cu Ft refrigerator that gets frost in the freezer. How can we avoid this?

if there's frost on the back inside wall of the freezer and the fridge is getting warm you have a defrost problem,or if frost is on packages and racks the door could of been left open or the door where the ice comes out might not be closing properly.if it's a defrost problem you could have a bad defrost fan motor, you wouldn't hear the fan turn on when you open the freezer door,a bad timer or board, you didn't send the model number, bad heater or thermostat or loose wire.

Refrigerator temp hovers around 59F - why won't it stay at 34F when I want it to?

Will you look into the rear of the freezer and see if a layer of frost is building on the rear panel. If yes this will indicate a defrost problem most times noticed by rising fresh food temperatures. Try to locate the model number around the door frame and see if you can find the exact model number. I may be able to find a model number by searching GE 22.3CU.FT Bottom Freezer Model Numbers. I believe the most likely reason for this will be a defective defrost heater and possibly defrost thermostat, Sea Breeze I will return with part numbers.

check that your flapper on the ice shut through the freezer door is fully closed,
make sure there is no ice forming around your evaporator fan, thats the fan in the freezer, if that gets glogged with ice and is forced to stop, it could blow your entire machine control......
the frost in the freezer leads me to believe you may have a defrost issue

GE refrigerator model PSS27MGMBB Freezer is not working

Open the freezer door and look at the back wall. If there is frost on the back wall, you have a defrost problem, which means air cannot circulate over the cooling coils located behind the freezers back wall. You will have to remove the back wall and melt all the frost with a hair blower, then replace the defrost heater. (part number WR51X10055) . This is assuming that the fan by the compressor and the one inside the freezer are working.

Although this machine is supposed to be frost-free (i.e. automatic defrost), there was a build up of frost. We manually defrosted the machine, then restarted it - the noise has stopped and the freezer and fridge are now working. However, this may be a temporary solution.

Red glow (from defrost heater?) at bottom of rear panel in freezer

This is from the GE Appliance "Knowledge Database" Web site:

Refrigerator - Explanation Of Red Glow

In a no frost refrigerator, the defrost timer activates defrost heaters in the evaporator section (rear of freezer) which heat up and melt the frost off the evaporator coils. This process lasts for approximately 25-45 minutes and usually happens up to twice a day.

During this time, there will be no running sounds, no fan noise, and you may hear water dripping or sizzling as it hits the heaters. On side by side models, you may even be able to see an orange glow at the bottom of the freezer.

This is normal.
