Rio Forge 256 mp3 player

I switched over to the radio on my player, now I can't get it back to playing mp3's.   I've had no luck with Rio's so-called tech support/knowledge base.

I have tried the menu button and all it does is reboot the player, and it goes right back to the radio. I've tried turning it off and back on, but that doesn't work. I've tried hard-rebooting (removing the battery and putting it back in) but when I turn the player back on it still goes back to the radio. I've even removed the sd card--not that I thought it would help, but I was getting desperate enough to try any possibility I could think of.

I'm sorry, but I could not really understand what the last gentleman was trying to say.

Here's the latest thing I've done to try to correct the problem: I connected the player to the usb cable and went into Rio Music Manager software and deleted all the files on the player. Then I found the player in "my computer" as F drive (and G drive with the sd card installed). I right clicked and selected Format, the selected FAT. I reformatted the player only. I then went back to Music Manager and loaded a few songs. When I disconnected it from the usb, it turned on and said internal memory was insufficient for the data I was attempting to load on it. I erased what I had put on the player. Then I formatted the sd card (using the same method as before). Then, the player turned on and off continuously, just showing the Rio Forge logo, turn off, turn on, turn off, etc. I replace the 1 gig sd card with the old 256mb card, but it did the same thing....the only thing that would stop the player turning on and off was taking out the battery. That's when I ran out of ideas.

Maybe your mp3 is infected of Virus! but for sure to go back in normal function/and to detect also whats wrong, or maybe have VIrus, all you have to do is to reformat your mp3 to software to see you the problem and to back to normal function! Thanks!!!

My rio forge player is showing "upgrader"

When mine did this it meant the firmware inside had gotten corrupted. It started working again when I reinstalled the firmware. The official firmware is available at the official website, and wikipedia promotes an unofficial firmware that provides more features.

For either of them, plug the unit into the USB port of your computer, then run the utility to upgrade the your Forge.

(Eventually, my Forge's internal memory storage died - it still play music from card memory, but every time I turn it on I have tell it my language is english etc.)

I hope that helps.

Having trouble getting my Rio Forge to work

Mine wasn't recognising the player through the USB cable so I followed Mantraguy's instructions to reload the firmware. Make sure though that you hold down the menu key before you switch on the player. Then it shows upgrade and you can reload the firmware. Of course you will lose all the songs on the internal memory but if it isn't working anyway.

good luck

Try hooking the player to your computer and reformat the memory in the player. Just like you would format a disk.

Can you repair the volume buttons on a Rio Forge

My switch broke, too. The player is easy to take apart, and you can see where the switch broke, but it's too small to sodder back yourself. I just switched to a headset with an adjustable volume slide on the wire. My player was stuck at a LOW volume, so I had to touch a wire across the switch leads to "click" back up to being stuck at a high volume. Now i use the headphone line to adjust from there.

I had exactly same trouble - at least twice..
One time a battery switch and drain for at least 10 min fixed it.
another time I reinstalled firmware...

No big deal..

Rio Forge 256Mb Mp3 Player

I had the same problem and, after scouring the internet in search of a solution, found nothing. So I started messing around with things. About 5 minutes ago I came up with something that worked for me! I'm still in 'testing' mode but it's playing some ACDC now so I'm happy. ;-)

My first step was to download a firmware 'update'. I'm not sure if it's newer or older than the firmware that I already had in there, but it works so what the heck. It's version 1.16 and is available for download here:

Filename is 'RioForgeFlash_116.exe'

To update the firmware, I connected the player via the USB cable. It will power itself up automatically - make sure you have a fresh set of batteries in it. Once it powers up, turn it off but leave it plugged in via USB. Then, power it up again but press and hold the mode button (the small button on the face, to the left of the main navigation buttons. It's the one you use to select different play modes etc.). It will power up and display 'UPGRADER'. From this mode, run the udate file (RioForgeFlash_116.exe); it will update the firmware in the Forge.

Once completed, my Forge interacted normally with the Rio Music Manager and I was able to upload music to it again. I did lose all the music that was in there and on the storage card, but that's better than having a useless MP3 player!

Best of luck!

Sorry for reverting to the basics, but have you tried taking the batteries out of it? That should revert it to its basic configuration.
