Is it buzzing and clicking every few minutes?

  • Anonymous Jun 17, 2009

Change the overload, relay and capacitor for the compressor, they are the parts that have failed, but they may have failed because they have just gone bad or the compressor is bad. If it starts right up after changing these parts, you are probably good for an indefinite amount of time, if it doesn't start then you need a new compressor, change these parts with the cord disconnected

How do I keep my refrig/freezer from defrosting in the winter when store in the garage.

There is only one source of cold in many refrigerators. If yours is a top freezer, then most likely it is in the freezer.
But the thermostat that you set temperature with is in the refrigerator, not the freezer.
In the cold garages, what can happen is that the refrigerator stays cold enough that it does not call for cold. So the freezer does not get enough cold.
The freezer control works by diverting cold air into the freezer WHEN THE RERIGERATOR HAS TURNED ON THE COOLING. If it is not turned on, oh well.
The best you can do for this is to put both on max cold. Then the refrigerator will call for more cold at a lower temperature, and the freezer will get it more often and will divert more when it is cooling.
This can result in the refrigerator freezing things too. You can try raising the refrigerator setting JUST A LITTLE and see if both work, but keep freezer on max cool.
This works for my situation, but ambient temperature fluctuations in the garage make this dicey. We don't put things like lettuce in the refrigerator in the garage in the winter because freezing damages them.
Good Luck

I have a frigidaire side by side #FSC23LR5JM2 that is not keeping cool enough. Age is aprox 1.5 yrs. Noticed the problem over a couple of days. Turned the temp cooler by 2 numbers in the frig and freezer,...

if the freezers staying cold but not the refrige section, then its the damper vent door between the freezer and refrige section thats either frozen shut or the damper door motor is bad or without power,if nothings cold as in freezer and refrigerator sections, then its the ptc overload & relay on the compressor thats bad, unplug the ptc overload & relay off the side of the compressor and obtain an exact replacement and plug in the new replacement and it will again cool

Seems to be constantly running. refridgerator section too cold, with items freezing.

it could be 1 of 3 things,1st: the ptc overload on the compressor has welded together and cant cycle on and off/2nd:the cold control is defective, this component is the part you set the units temperature with/3rd:your damper vent door located between the freezer and refrigerator compartments could have frozen open from condensation and cant close to keep the cold out of the refrigerator after the refrige is cool enough, this is behind a plastic grille in the refrigerator and brings in cool air from the freezer

Frigidaire refrigerator with a broken freezer

He is correct. The temp in the refrig controls how often and for how long the refrig runs. Lets say the temp in your garage is 34 degrees, and you have your refrig set to 36 degrees: The refrig will never run, the fresh foods section will cool to 34, and the freezer will warm to 34. Even if the temp is 45 in the garage and you set the fresh foods to be 33, the refrig will not need to run long enough and often enough to keep the freezer temp cold enough. You will most likely need to have the ambient room temp at least 55 degrees to get satisfactory refrigerator performance. Insulating the refrig will not help. (by the way, outdoor beverage vending machines use an internal heater in cold weather to prevent liquid beverages inside from freezing,..... so using that info, you could put a low wattage heater in your refrig to make your refrig run enough to make the freezer section work. The %&#* with that, just move it into the house!)

Freezer & freezer work fine. Water stops when refrige is set at 38 degrees. To keep water from freezing we have to set the refrige temp to 40 degrees, but find that temp not cold enough. Water can...

It may have auto-defrost or frost-free feature that is not operating. Also there is a drain tube that goes from the compartments to the bottom of the fridge where the evaporator pan is. The tube may be plugged.
