Question about Refrigerators

Amana SXD26VW not cool enough

I purchased an Amana side-by-side refrigerato in March 1999. About 2 weeks ago I noticed the freezer was not as cold as it used to be. I checked the temperature and found the freezer to be between 17 and 20 degrees F. where it was always 0 F. before. The compressor cycles normally, but does stay on most of the time. The refrigerator is running about 40, which is normal. A repairman told me that the lines feeding the compressor have become clogged by the fluid coagulating in the compressor and filters and the compressor is over-heating. He said the compressor must be replaced. I can’t understand that if the compressor is running just fine and cooling the freezer to 17-20 degrees and the lines are just clogged, why can’t I just replace the lines and save the compressor. All the fans both inside and outside are running properly. I am 80 years old and living on a fixed income and I can hardly afford a new compressor or a new refrigerator. Please e-mail me at rlk28@verizon.net.

Just because the compressor is running doesn't mean it works as designed, the repair technician is right, I think u need to go with the recommendation of the repair person on this one. The symptom you gave me is a faulty compressor module in most cases.

Hi,

First thing you should do is verify that the compressor is running. Remove the back panel and touch the compressor (be careful, it might be hot) to see if you feel a small vibration. If its not running but the condensor fan and evaporator fan is you more than likley have a bad realy or a bad compressor.
Now you did say it does cool somewhat, so the compressor has to be running at times, but be sure its not shutting off when it should be on.

So if the compressor is running, next thing to do is clean the stuff out of the freezer and remove the evaporator cover in the back of the inside of the freezer. Its at the bottom and theres about 10 or 12 quarter inch screws holding it on there. After you get it off check to see that you have a frost patern on the evaporator coil. If theres no frost or very little at the top where the capilary tube (very small line) comes in to the evaporator you have a sealed system leak. If thats the case put everything back together and call an authrized Amana servicer to fix it because there is a 5 year full warranty on that, and its a pretty common problem with Amana side by sides. If its over 5 years old (to the day) it wont be under the full warranty, so check your owners manual before you call to see whats covered and to avoid service call charges if its really out of warranty.
If you cant even see the evaporator and all you see is frost or "snow" the refrigerator has stopped going through the defrost cycle. This could be from one of a few reasons. First and most common is a defective defrost thermostat, but if the evaporator fan inside the freezer is running then the defrost thermostat is good, the defrost heater is good to if thats the case. The defrost heater can go out, but Amana uses a Calrod heater in there and failures are almost non-existant. Only other thing it could be is a defective defrost timer or a defective Adaptive Defrost Control board. Determine which system your refrigerator has and you can check it from there.

Suggestion:

Your freezer is probably iced up, blocking airflow to the fridge part. Unplug it for 2 days and let it stand open to defrost or take the evaporater cove off and defrost it with warm water or a hair dryer. Just dont melt any plastic walls/parts. This could be because a door was left ajar, or because your defrost sytem failed if it happens again. Good Luck!

If the freezer is staying cold it sounds like a defrost system problem. A bad timer, heater or thermostat can cause frost to build up on the coils and block air flow to the refrig side. Check out ACMEHowTo.com for troubleshooting the defroster problem.
There is a small duct between the freezer and refrigerator side if this is blocked the frig side won't cool.

Freezer too cold, fridge not working - Amana freezer on bottom

Something tells me you are right.
I'm sure you know that cold air seeks the lowest point, in your case, the freezer drawer.
About every combination unit I have ever seen uses a fan to 'stir' the air in a controlled manner and one or more adjustable vents to allow you to balance the distribution of the cooled air.
I'd place my bet on the failure of a (possibly Chinese) fan motor that isn't turning anymore.

Fresh Food Compartment not cold enough

check freezer for frost build up and if fan blowing, check condenser make sure clean, and fan blowing, check vents in refrig. make sure no blockage, freezer control should be in the middle setting, you can try turning that to Warmer freezer allowing MORE air to refrigertor side.
