Laptop will not start. Power light comes on and battery indicator light blinks twice. other than that there is no fan, no screen, no hd or cd-rom movement. Just light when a/c adapter is plugged in. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hello. There is a hardware failure with the laptop not the AC charger. AC chargers have some range of protections of their own. If the power requirements of the laptop are bigger then what the charger can handle, the charger will turn off. Also other parameters can bring the charger offline. In your case, you have a problem with a small chip, the battery charge controller unit, witch regulates the amount of current required to propperly charge the battery. When this thing fails, the charging requirements for the battery are reported rong and the AC charger is forced to give more power then necesary. This results in disconnection of the AC charger ( an internal fail safe of the AC charger) and the laptop to swich back to battery power. When the laptop is turned off, it can charge the battery because the power requirements are low, having all processor, main board, hard disk etc turned off. Therefore the AC charger can handle the load. However you will need to have it checked by a service center as it is a hardware fault. Both AC charger and laptop needs that check. The charge controll circuit needs to be replaced probably. It will be a somewhat expensive repair. Don't buy any other battery untill you have the laptop checked. For more aditional info please post back. PS. Sorry for my bad english, I am from Romania, it is pretty hard for me to explain tehnical stuff in english.

Hi,
To check if the problem is the power adaptor or the Vaio, just have a look at the charger itself and see if the green light on the adaptor itself is on?If yes, then more likely it is working fine. If no light, change the fuse in the plug and try again.
You can also try a static discharge on the Vaio. Please remove all external devices, unplug the adaptor and remove the battery. Put your finger on the power button and hold it for about 30 seconds. Then connect the power adaptor again and try to boot.

Purito

These are know to have issues with the cpacitors on the mother board, you can try to replace the caps or just buy a new motherboard. I'm fixing one right now as I type...
SOURCE: Sony VAIO VGN-FE770G only runs on AC power, battery not working
This looks like the system is not able to sustain itself on the battery power. I have a doubt here. Is it a new or an old laptop. Either Case we have to suspect the battery charging and battery condition. One another reason could be that the battery contact is not good. But this could be of the least chance as the manufacturing of such devices would be perfect in all standards. Lets check the battery power first.
A sony Vaio never operates if the battery is not detected or the battery is not charging, while the system is up and running, you can see a small picture of the battery in the system tray which is at the right bottom corner of the screen. Run your mouse over the same and you will find a tooltiptext message and you can see if the battery is charging or not. If not, your hardware has a problem. If its charging but the battery charge is not increasing, then you have a battery problem. If its a battery problem and that the system is under warranty, you can well get a replacement for free. Hope this resolves the issue. Good Luck.
