To change the MTU rate on your router follow the steps below:
• Open your browser, enter the IP address of your router (192.168.0.1) and click OK.
• Enter your username (admin) and password (blank by default). Click OK to enter the web configuration
page for the device.
• Click on Setup and then click Manual.Configure.
• To change the MTU enter the number in the MTU field and click Save.Settings to save your settings.
• Do a test. If changing the MTU does not resolve the problem, continue changing the MTU in increments of ten.

1500 is default

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Increasing Speed of Internet Using MTU settings in xp

Increasing Speed of Internet Using mtu settings in Windows XP:
Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) refers to the size (in bytes) of the largest packet that a given layer of a communications protocol can pass onwards. MTU parameters usually appear in association with a communications interface. The MTU may be fixed by standards (as is the case with Ethernet) or decided at connect time (as is usually the case with point-to-point serial links). A higher MTU brings higher bandwidth efficiency.

A higher MTU brings higher bandwidth efficiency.

The default and maximum PPPoE MTU size is 1,480 bytes. With some Internet service providers (ISPs), you may have to reduce the MTU size of a PPPoE connection to a value between 1,400 and 1,480 (for example, to 1,454). Do not set an MTU size smaller than 1,400.
Modify the MTU size requires registry editing in windows xp
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To modify the PPPoE MTU size, create the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ndiswan\Parameters\Protocols\0
Then add the following registry entries.Entry name Data type Value data
ProtocolType REG_DWORD 0x00000800
PPPProtocolType REG_DWORD 0x00000021
ProtocolMTU REG_DWORD the appropriate MTU size (in decimal)

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ndiswan\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
4. Type Protocols, and then press ENTER.
5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
6. Type 0, and then press ENTER.
7. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
8. Type ProtocolType, and then press ENTER.
9. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
10. Type 800, and then click OK.

11. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

12. Type PPPProtocolType, and then press ENTER.

13. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
14. Type 21, and then click OK.

15. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

16. Type ProtocolMTU, and then press ENTER.
17. On the Edit menu, click Modify.

18. Type the appropriate MTU size (decimal value), and then click OK.

19. Quit Registry Editor.

I have a Motorola WR850G router which works just fine for broadband internet access for our laptop and our desktop. We are trying to connect xBox Live and we are getting an error message that Maximum...

Starting on page 3-3 of the WR850G user manual, there is a setting for "PPP MTU".
Whether or not this will change the overall MTU of the router is not clear. Apparently the default setting is "0", which I would guess is automatic. I would try changing the setting to 1500 and work your way down from there until xbox live is hopefully satisfied.
Good luck...

I have a 2Wire modem and i need to Change my Mtu settings how will i do this?

A computer's MTU or maximum transmission unit is a measure of the amount of data that can be sent over a specific network protocol at one time. Because the various network protocols on your computer all have to communicate with one another the MTU of your system can have detrimental effects if improperly set. The MTU most often referenced when talking about PCs is the TCPIP MTU. This is the MTU value used for all internet communication on your computer.
  1. tep 1 Launch DrTCP and select the proper network adapter from the "Adapter Settings" pull down list box at the bottom of the program. The adapter you choose should be the one physically connected to your modem or router for internet accessmag-glass_10x10.gif via an ethernet cable. You can find proper hardware name of the adaptor by going to the windows control panel and clicking on "Network Places" to see which adaptor handles your internet connection.
  2. Step 2 Enter a numerical value between 1400 and 1500 in the text box labeled "MTU". This numerical value is transmitted to every remote server you request data from to be used as a common size of data to be sent with every packet of data sent to your computer. It is advised you start at 1500 and move down in increments of 10 until a satisfactory result is found. Usually MTU problems are not a result of your hardware or the remote server. The problem almost always is ISP hardware not supporting frames as large as you and the remote server have agreed upon sending. Lowering your MTU value in increments allows you to find the largest size possible without having packets dropped due to being too large.
  3. Step 3 Click "Save" and exit the program by clicking "Exit" or clicking the "X" button in the upper right corner of the windowsmag-glass_10x10.gif form.
  4. Step 4 Restart your computer for the changes to take effect and check to see if the changed MTU has increased system network performance. This process of trial and error may require several attempts to find a setting that is optimal depending on your specific network configuration. If you are unable to find an MTU setting that works a quick call to your ISP to ask what their recommended MTU setting should resolve things.

MTU settings

So your first problem is to learn how to login to your router. Please see your documentation. You can usually find the documentation for any router/homegateway at the vendors website.

If you still can't logon you may have to do a "hard reset" of the router/gateway to force it back to the default logon/password.

Now having solved that you need to understand that the largest MTU setting that you can use to increase your internet performance must be equal to or smaller than the smallest MTU setting between you and your internet target. If you make the MTU larger than that it will slow down your connection because it will now have to use 2 frames transmit and recieve what it used to only use one for.

While there are tools that can help you with that, the simplest solution is to find out what your ISP says the MTU should be.

In computer networking, the term Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) refers to the size (in bytes) of the largest packet that a given layer of a communications protocol can pass onwards.
MTU parameters usually appear in association with a communications interface (NIC, serial port, etc.).
The MTU may be fixed by standards (as is the case with Ethernet) or decided at connect time (as is usually the case with point-to-point serial links).
A higher MTU brings higher bandwidth efficiency. However, large packets can block a slow interface for some time, increasing the lag on other packets. For example, a 1,500-byte packet, the largest allowed by Ethernet (and most of the Internet), would block up a 14.4k modem for about one second.
The default MTU on a PPPoE connection is 1,492. The default MTU for a DHCP or PPPoA connection is 1,500.
Increasing the MTU size beyond these levels is possible on a client computer, but not recommended, because the MTU size on the outbound connection to the ISP will nullify any potential gains from a larger MTU.
