Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

Can't receivee a fax. Machine stays in selftest mode

We have a HP Office 6210 Fax Machine that won't go out of selftest mode. Any recommendations? We have unplugged it, had the telephone line checked, and also took it to another office to no avail.

The ink cartridges would not move to the left for replacement. Also, when you unplug the fax machine and plug it back in you hear nothing and it starts showing Selftest and the indicator marker showing it is selftesting stops when it gets to the right side of the display screen.

Cartidge carriage slid easily to the right for changing cartridge, but would not move back to left automatically, had to manually push it back to position, and the selftest display did not change.

None of it helped. Cartridge did not move after replugging the machine in, and plugging in the machine while holding down the # and 3 key selftest came back on, cartridge did not move, Selftest and the indicator marker showing it is selftesting stops when it gets to the right side of the display screen. I guess it would be cheaper to trash it and buy a new one rather than ship it for repair.

If it's out of ink, it would remain in sef test mode until it's able to print a report. Make sure the unit is plugged in and check the ink cartridge(s). This may have been the problem that initiated running the self test all along. Post back with any other questions or comments.

If it's stuck in self test, it's normal not to hear anything. Try moving the cartridge carriage to the left manually and see if it:

    • Stays in position to allow a cartridge change

    • Moves back to it's prior position

    • Gives a different error and/or the self test error changes
the cartridges ride along a chain and should slide freely. If they are stuck then you've isolated the problem.

    There are 2 other options:

    1. Check to see if there is a paper jam; this would also prevent a self test report from printing

    2. With the cartridge carriage in the middle, unplug the machine; when you plug it back in, the carriage should return to it's normal position on its own

    3. Try to reset; Unplug the machine, Press and hold the "#" and the "3" simultaneiously while plugging the machine back in, release when display resets

If none of these options fix your problem, then I'm afraid a service call will be needed. Best of luck.

You might want to remove the rear door and poke around. It wouldn't take much to trip a paper jam error which also would prevent the self test from completing. Wish I could do more for you Bob. Please reconsider the negative rating you gave my solution. I did work on the issue and although I may not have solved the problem, I'm sure you found some of the information helpful in some way. All the best.

I have a HP 6210, it is not hooked up to computer. I only want to use it to receive and send faxes but its not working

The following link will take you to your user manual on the HP.com web site. Go to fax setup (chapter 10) then "Choose the right fax setup for your home or office". It shows several scenarios to setup your fax. Hopefully you can find what you need. GOOD LUCK!

Receive fax on the fax system as well as your PC

If you change the number of rings on the fax machine to more than on your PC, your PC should receive the fax first and accomplish your goal.
