I have an old Toshiba 5005-S504 - want wireless connection

I have an old Toshiba 5005-S504 that I want my kids to use. They need to access the internet. I have a wireless router that I want to connect to. How do I find out if this computer is wireless capable, has a wireless card, etc? Also, if I need to buy a wireless card - suggestions? Is it easy to install?

Thanks!

It's definitely wireless capable. It doesn't look like it came wireless by default, but you can check for sure by looking in the device manager. (Instructions to do that here , here, & here.)
See link here for detailed specs from Toshiba, as well as downloads if you need to get the drivers for your wireless adapter. And if you look at page 2 under wireless, you'll see the card they supplied as an accessory to some folks, which will surely be supported by Toshiba. (Orinoco wireless LAN PC card (Gold)). See page 182 of the user's guide available here for info on using these; they are simple to install. Make sure you read through the support bulletins for your model as there may be updates that will affect it.
I don't know anything about this company, but a web search turns up this, among others, as a source for a wireless card. You will have better luck with one known to be compatible with your model laptop, but if you search some of the Toshiba support forums online I'm sure some folks there have other favorites.
Finally, I recommend you update the drivers for your system by following this tutorial. If you're using xp install the recovery console according to this link, and scan for malware according to these malware removal protocols, and possibly do some maintenance (link here or here) before you turn your kids loose. That way you'll have a baseline established and the capacity to recovery from most troubles they might engender.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Your computer does not have built in wireless, you would have to get pc card (type II or II, read about it with wiki link), they're basically plug and play with an install disc.
you can buy them online (or at any Best Buy or computer electronics store) here: "http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=34&name=Laptop-Networking"

I looked at the specs of the laptop and it doesnt seem to have a inbuilt wireless card. Here is where I looked and if this is indeed the laptop you have, then it doesnt have a wireless card built it, http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/product/6781/review/satellite_5005s504.html
Since it has 3 USB ports, you can use one of those ports to add a wireless card. Netgear has a card.. More detials of this card are in this link. http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adapters/WirelessGAdapters/WG111.aspx
So, if you plug the WG111 in and install it, it should help work. Netgear has free 90 days support and they can help you install. Not complicated at all,if you read the manual before calling the customer.
Hope this helps Ranjit ranjit@supportminds.com

5005-S504 recovery disk says Wrong Machine. downloaded new bios years ago to prevent overheating per Toshiba. Can I still use recovery? Does Toshiba still offer bios upgrade

Yes but this is nothing to do with recovery disk if it is original Toshiba. Check your HDD as external to see if any partition is inside. If you wanted to install new program, then format the harddisk with external connection. If you had vista upgraded, it may say wrong machine but I doubt it.

It sounds like the hard drive is dying. I had a computer do the same thing and it turned out to be the hard drive. You should still be able to access the bios though. Try hittind either delete or F1 as soon as your toshiba screen appears.

Toshiba satellite 5005-S504 Secure Digital Card Slot problem

Hi there
Take a close look inside the card slot (you may need a torch/flashlight) look to see if any of the brass pins are bent or out of position, if they are use a very small flat head screwdriver to gently push them back into place.
If all looks fine with the slot and there are no foreign objects inside your card maybe faulty.
Also i suggest the you check the drivers are installed, check this in device manager.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
