First make sure you're not leaving your gas lever on 'choke' after starting your mower....especially if its a fairly new mower.

If its an older mower you may have a valve thats sticking and allowing too strong of a gas mixture.

If its the latter and you fancy yourself a handyman and want to tear into it...check on-line. Their are a number of web-sites that may be able to help you with your problem...such as this one:

Hope that helps you.

Why does oil leak from the exhaust when I crank my mower an blue/white smoke appear?

If you are saying it smokes for a short period after starting.most likely you have worn valve stem seaps " O " rings worn will allow a small amount of oil left in the overhead valves to leak past the seals and into the cylinder when shut down..try some good engine restore and add to your oil..if the smoke is constant...your engine will need an overhaul..good luck

Burning oil

Assuming its a briggs and stratton
kohlers have hydraulic valves

check its not overfull of oil
smell the oil does it smell like gas?
if so remove carb. clean thoroghly and drain and refill oil
check valve clearance .004 both exhaust and intake (cold engine)
valve cover gasket could be leaking on the exhaust
could have a partially blown or blown head gasket also

When I engage the blades, I smell and see blue smoke, so disengaged the blade

Its not the drive belt. You have a bearing or etc. out.
I just have problem. The spindle bearing was bad.

I have a briggs and stratton quicksilver, just got some string stuck round blade and mower stopped turned it on it's side freed string started up and oily smoke coming out of exhaust

Not to worry. When you tipped the mower on its side, oil ran into the exhaust. Allow the engine to run few minutes and it will stop smoking. The B&S engine will put oil in the muffler if tipped to the left, and oil into the carburetor if tipped on the right. The only safe way to tip the engine is where the spark plug is pointed upward.
Don't forget to check your oil level and adjust as necessary.
Good luck!

After starting car it sputters and white smoke from exhast. I drive the car for 5 min, sputtering the whole time, and turn it off - will not start until it is cranked and gas pressed for couple min. Then...

White smoke is usually from water and water will make the car splutter. Did you get water in your tank at some time. If you have water in your fuel, you will have to drain the tank and refill with good fuel. The engine will run fine once it is hot but if a lot of water goes into a hot cylinder it can cause a lot of damage.

White smoke and blade won't engage

Sounds like a low compression problem. The piston rings have most likely failed and oil is seeping past them and burning, thus the white smoke. An engine needs three things to run...Spark, Compression, and Fuel. Just take the mower back as it is still probably under warranty. Mike. Rate 100% please.

Lawn mower engine runs rough and puts out white smoke

Pull the carburetor and clean it for staters.Be sure to change oil any little bit of moisture in the crankcase will let it smoke white by seeping by the valves and piston rings. Also put a little small amount of dry gas in the gas tank to rid all of the water that may have been left in the tank. I some of this will help you.
