I have a Bernina Artista 180 with older softerware. The dongle is a parellel port which does not fit on my new laptop. I have been told by my local Bernina Store thqt I can purchase an adapter for this problem. I have not beenn able to locate this adapter. Could someone help me. Thanks., Francette
Re: I need to convert my parellel port dongle to USB
I have the same problem...V3 software. have not heard of an adapter. The software wouldn't work with Windows XP or Vista anyway. I upgraded to Editor plus V5 but have kept my old Designer plus on an ancient laptop so I can transfer old patterns. You will also find that your new laptop doesn't have a serial port to accomodate the old cable to bernina 180. Unfortunately it's always the case with updating a PC. Everything else has to follow! My advice, get hold of an old laptop:)

Unfortunately, your dongle is like a Key that is made just for your machine. You could try contacting Bernina or the place where you bought the machine originally and ask if they can send you a replacement. I've afraid it will be very expensive though.
Just use the free download software from Bernina called Artlink. I used it along with a USB to Serial converter cable to connect to the machine. Works wonderfully. Allows me to still use my old Artista designer software if I want to on an older machine and then when I want to actually transfer the designs I use the laptop with the USB cable.
HASP or security device dongles were used on earlier Artista software. If your machine still has a parallel port and the HASP devie is on the connector then you probably upgraded windows over time. There is a XP device driver fix you may need to install. I recently loaded the ancient Artista software into a modern machine so I know it can be done. Just need to have the proper hardware support.
If all your trying to do is communicate with the machine from the PC then look into an USB to SERIAL converter and use the Artlink software from Bernina (free). Has much of the function that the earlier software did except for limited edit capabilities.
Just happen to be sitting in front a Bernina 180 at this very moment - with the connecting cable attached to a Keyspan USA-19HS Adapter. It is a current adapter available from either Keyspan (www.keyspan.com) or any number of computer retailers - physical or online. Seems to run around $30.00 just about everywhere. Auction sites may have bargain. Worked like a charm on an older XP computer as I was able to test the older software I had due to it having the necessary parallel port the the older dongle. While I am fairly certain this combination would also work on my Windows 7 computer, I am unable to test it as I have not come across a parallel adapter that will work with the older software parallel dongle. I've had other programs/peripherals that utilize usb to serial adapter (on my Windows 7) that have worked fine, so I suspect this would also be the case.
Hope this helps. If you have specific questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
I am assuming that you are talking about the cable from the sewing machine to the computer...
Here is the disappointing answer. You cannot hook the 180e up to a Windows System 7 computer or Vista. I have an older computer with XP on it just for my sewing machine. If you want to hook up the sewing machine to a computer that does not have a 9-pin, you will need to buy an adapter that goes from 9-pin to USB. I bought one from Belkin, and you may need to buy it online. It costs about $30.
I have the embroidary software version 4 that has a dongle. It will also not work on Vista or System 7 and the Bernina dealer says I can upgrade for $400.
it's in your computer control panel - you need to assign the com port to the cable - it took me a few tries.
In the long run, I bought the Editor Lite software for $120 on ebay - it comes with a USB dongle - that solved all my issues other than assigning the com port to the serial port. It all works like a charm now.
Hello. No, the only way you are going to get this to work is to replace the software with new ones, as all software come with different dongle numbers. The dongle numbers are specifically for the software that you have, you can't even change dongles. Can you get in touch with the seller to give you the dongle? I have a set of Cracked software for the BERNINA ARTISTA 180 that I can copy for you for $200, which you don't need a dongle for. Email me on: email@example.com I have a BERNINA ARTISTA 180 as well and this is the software I run. RRP for the VERSION 3 and the CPS software is $4500.00. Thanks. Lawrence
