Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional With Service Pack for PC

1 Answer

Program window hidden offscreen

My computer is going nuts and several things are going wrong. My issue at the moment is that when I open up Skype, the window with my contacts is appearing somewhere off-screen. I have an extended desktop with two monitors, and for some reason the desktop space is not being limited to the boundaries of my monitors. I can still take a window and move it half in, half off of the screen (or all off, as is the problem with Skype currently).

As for Skype, I have the icon in my taskbar and can receive incoming messages. But I cannot initiate any conversations because I cannot reach my contact menu.

I believe that the cause is related to the fact that when I right click on the desktop and select Properties, I no longer have any tabs but the Themes one. No wallpaper, no screensaver, no monitor settings.

If anyone can solve the tabs problem, they're a freaking genius. I'll be perfectly content if someone can just tell me how to get my Skype window onto my visible monitor space.

Thanks, Jon! Fantastic solution and I wouldn't be surprised if it solved my problem. As soon as I work up the nerve to edit my registry, I'll try it. :)

Try this to solve the tab problem. It involves editing the registry. I would recommend reading this MS article on how to backup/recover your registry before following the steps below. It can be found HERE.

Once a backup is created, open up the registry by clicking on the Start Button, then choosing "Run..." from the start menu. This will open a little dialog box, in that box type "regedit" and click OK.

This will open the registry, you will want to navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

You should then see something like this: *Note this is my registry, and the keys might not be the same, take note of the path at the bottom of the window and that it matches what i posted above"
Program window hidden offscreen - 8cf6ad0.png

In that folder, you should see something like 'NoDispAppearancePage' in the right hand window with a value of (1). Double click on the value and change the Value Data to 0. Try this until all the tabs come back, if they do not work, change them back to their original values.

Hope this helps.

First thing to try is uninstall and reinstall skype. If you are using windows 8 be sure to download skype for desktop and not the app.

You can find uninstall by going into your control panel and choosing "uninstall a program."

Fix #6: Check your Antivirus Software
It's possible that the virus can attack your PC from any open source. Additionally, it critically influences the system performance and slows it down. At such time, your Skype program also gets infected by it. So, install trustworthy security software to scan your computer and detect/remove the threatening programs. Also, ensure that your security program isn't blocking the Skype from working. If it's, then seek the help for it to detect the cause and fix the issue instantly.

This is true, especially if the video images break up. The best thing to do is to switch off the WEBcam and just use Skype with the mic. The audio will be clearer.

How to use my webcam

assuming that the camera is installed and functional ..( it has the driver to suit it ) ...the main use for a web camera is to make video calls from an instant messaging program like yahoo messenger ..or windows live ( msn ) messenger ...or skype ....
so ..open and sign in into messenger yahoo ...using the installled program into computer and not the chat from the mail page ...
on the conversation window you will have a camera sign ...and pressing it will send a message to the other that you invite him to see your web camera ...
in the same moment a window will open on your screen and you will be able to see yourself...( some confirmations will be asked for )
into msn ..the issue is a little different cause the cameras will start automatically in the moment when you press the video call into the conversation window...infact ..its about the same on all im programs ...
another use for it is to make snap shots photo like ...by using the camera from the my computer ...where it should be present like a drive ...and has a task in the left for to take snap shots
you ca also use it to make captures after you open it from all programs ...AM cap ...or Video cap ...it depends on how is present there ...and also for this feature you will have to go on all buttons from the window that will apear and set the settings ...like preview....save director...and file name after saving ...
in short it can be used for many things ..but the main is the video calls that are possible with an instant messaging program ...

Hi,

To help resolve some common connection issues on Windows Vista, please
follow these steps:

1) Please make sure, that you are running the latest version of Skype

2) If Skype is running, please close it by right-clicking on the Skype
icon in the system tray (next to the clock) and selecting Quit Skype or
via File > Close.

thereafter.

Finally you could try below:
This is a regular Vista idiocy, occurring from time to time to random applications and has nothing to do with Skype. Thanks, Mr. Gates.

How to fix it:

1. Go to your Skype program directory, then navigate to the subdirectory Phone.
2. Right-click the Skype executable, select Properties.
3. Go to Compatibility tab.
4. Select compatibility mode, and choose Run this program in compatibility mode - Windows XP Service Pack 2.

C. Windows Live Messenger:
  1. After you start Windows Live Messenger, expand the view by clicking on the square on top left next to the red X.
  2. Then on the Windows Live messenger window on the right side, click on “ “Show Menus.” And then click on “Show the Menu Bar”.
  3. Next go to the Menu Bar on right side, click on “ “Action.”
  4. Go to “TOOLS” and click “Audio and Video Setting” and follow the instructions.
