Question about HP Compaq Presario R4000 Notebook
My computer was taken apart by a technician to repair the external power port. When I got it back it no longer recognized the CD/DVD drive. It obviously receives power because it opens and closes/ spools up. But under BIOS, My computer and the device manager it is not listed.
There are two cables to the drive. One supplies power and the other data. It sounds like possibly the data cable is loose, either from the drive itself or the motherboard, or it has been damaged and no longer functions.
See pdf of your service manual here., pg. 62. I'd say the tech should repair it for you, but you'll have to decide if you want to return it to them or delve in yourself. If you decide to do it there are some guides online to show you how to take it apart...tread carefully here.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

I would try remove the optical drive and put it back in. It may not be very easy with your model laptop. There will be one or two screws holding it in place and I think they may be under the keyboard Its not very normal for that to happen when repairing a power socket. If they are a reasonable shop they should fix the cd problem for you. If they are like most laptop repair companies they will claim it wasnt their fault and charge you for it again. The cd drive will be held in by either one screw underneath the laptop or one or two screws under the keyboard.
