Garmin 178C Stays on for 20 secs then turns off

Had the same problem. Cleaned the connector which I thought fixed the problem. That was last year. Now I have to turn it on a dozen times or so before it will stay on. Turns on for 20 sec then shuts down. Turn on 12 x's and it finally stayed on. Don't know what will happen next time I'm out. Can't have this happening on a night trip. According to Garmin Website this is a discountinued model. Hoped someone else had problem and fixed. Thinking it maybe a thermal prob. W/O schematics hard to TS.

I had the same problem. In your settings you can set this thing to monitor your battery's power so it auto shut down if your battery goes below 11.2 volts or so. I disabled this and it has worked ever since.

On mine, it was the power cable itself. I had been living with sporadic shut downs for several years. Then I sheared off my transducer. When I replaced the transducer, it forced me to a new power cable. Problem solved. I should have known better, my street pilot 3 and my colormap both had similar issues that a new power cable resolved.

4 years after I replaced my cable, I started having problems with the unit powering up again. I checked the boat side of the connector and saw that the brass female connectors were ever so slightly splayed. Using a very fine watch repair screwdriver, I pushed the two sides of each receptacle back together. Then I made sure all of the connectors were clean. Hooked it up and it powered right up. Now I make sure to just pull the plug straight out, rather than wiggle it off. Works great!!

6 months later, the replaccment power cable gave up. Upon refreshing my memory on the GPS wiring, I learned that I can replace the power side of the harness while keeping the 4 year old transducer. Found a new Garmin power pig tail that includes a weather cap on a popular Auction Site for less than $30. I think my previous recommendation is a temporary fix to giveyou time while you look for a new power pigtale.

I have used the Gpsmap 178c for about 3 years now. Recently I have started be unable to find satelites, wass on or off. Once in a while it works. presently I get no satelites I would buy a new antenna...

Based on the problems I have seen with this unit the problem is the reciever circuit not the antenna, so you should consider a new unit, Garmin charges a fortune to repair these.

My Garmin GPSMAP 178C screen backlight failed

Backlight problem: Remove the display, remove the light tube from behind the LCD. Buy a led panel from Ebay for around $5 and install it behind the LCD under the drfusing layers. Run the wires out to a 12 VDC source and there you have it.

GPSMAP 178C Sounder GPS Receiver: My 178C will not stay powered up. I just replaced ...

I had the same problem with mine. It is caused by a crimped wire on the internal harness inside the machine. I opened it up and discovered that when originally put together 3 of the wires from the plug were crimped. One was broken off. The only way to fix it is to open it up, restrip the wires place a piece shrink wrap on before you solder it back and then make the shrink wrap flush with the back of the plug and heat her up. And, Voila... no more intermittent operation. Hope this helps? John

Garmin 178c won't find satellites

It would appear that your Garmin has no clue as to where it is on the planet. I think a trip to the owner's manual:

http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/GPSMAP178CSounder_OwnersManual.pdf

might be your best bet to help initialize your unit. The info on how to graphically initialize your Garmin can be found on page 5.

Hope this is helpful.
Good Luck!

Garmin 178c turns off on it's own.

Hi

Sounds very much like the wiring plug connections in the back, always overlooked but so important that connections are tight and contacting.

Garmin 178C Boots up then shuts off

I've had a similar situation with a Magellan, it would power off despite being plugged in.

Its usually a battery issue, perhaps its not getting enough power? You could try to unplug it and do a "hard battery reset" depending on the type of battery. Keep turning it on and let it run out, until it wont even turn on anymore, after that plug it into a charger while off and allow it to charge completely. Turn it on, see if it still shuts off.

Good luck!

Garmin 178C Boots up then shuts off

Check the pins at the connector on the back of your unit. Make sure one of them is not bent or broken off. One of the pins on mine is missing about 1/16" of the tip. My boat repair shop says it's the power lead, but Garmin wants $200 for a generic repair.
