Question about SanDisk ULTRA II 4GB Compact Flash Card Flash

1 Answer

My card won't work on my computer, what is wrong?

I have a sandisk UltraII 2gb compact flash card, a Dynex Compact Flash Card reader/writer, and a Canon Powershot S1IS. The card is fine inside of the camera, and the card used to work just fine with the card reader. Now, when I try to get pictures off of it by plugging it into the computer, this pops up: 'F:DCII is not accesible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.' I tried reformatting it last night before taking pictures, because this had happened previously on my other computer as well. What should i do?

When you format the card, be sure to do it in the camera, as the camera firmware writes hidden files to the card.
When you insert the card into the card reader, be sure to set write-protect, so the contents cannot be corrupted.
I suspect what may have happened is that at some point there has been a conflict between files written to the card by the camera and the computer.

Dynamite,
have you tried to reformat the CF card?  If you deleted the image through your computer and not with the camera, the computer may have removed more than what was needed...

SOURCE: strange characters in file name

Dear Adriana,

Try downloading your pictures through a USB2 card reader. I have found that some cards are not 100% compatible - a bit like computer memory: Unless the brand is tested and recommended by the manufacturer, you are never really sure until you try it out both in the camera and through computer interfaces. I strongly recommend Kingston Ram. A 2GB SD card is around $18 AUS and has a lifetime warrantee. If it is not compatible, you will get your money back.

SOURCE: SanDisk Ultra 11 CompactFlash Card 4Gb says "Card not Initalized"

You may need to format the card. There should be a Format command in the Setup menu. To be more specific, one would need to know which model of Finepix camera you refer to.

If you reied formating these cards in your computer and it did not removed the photos, then format these cards using the Nikon camera.
When I format my compact memory card in my Nikon it erases all the photos at once.

My computer wont read my sdhc card

If you know that your CF card is working (e.g. as in your camera) then the most likely cause is your computer Flash/CF reader either inbuilt or external): older readers (and cameras/phones) will not support High Capacity (xxHC) card and will be limited to a maximum of 2GB. Hope it helps.

Sandisk card is not registering when attached to the computer

Make sure the reader is not USB 1.0 because the 4GB CF card is a UDMA type card that the USB 1.0 cannot recognize. Upgrade to a USB 2.0 reader and you should have no problem.

After inserting the sandisk into my computer, I get an error message. It says I/O device error. What does this mean?

It usually means that your Input/Output device (e.g. Card Reader either internal or External) is not compatible with your Flash card which is a 'newer' high speed and high capacity medium (OR your Flash card is a new one and has not been formatted). You can check that your card reader is working by inserting a 'standard' (not ULTRA) working lower capacity card (1GB or smaller). Hope it helps: let me know hoe you go.

The solution was sooo easy.....one of my online embroidery groups suggested to put the card in my Janome and let the machine format it. It took about a minute and did not tell me what it was doing..and It worked! It put two folders on my card, Emb5 and ord#5, and I was to copy the jef files into the Emb5 folder, which I did and bingo! my Janome 9500 read the card and produced a screen with my jef files in it. I am a happy camper....I don't know if this works with all Janome machines but it did with mine.
Thanks for being here to help.

Instead of connecting via the camera, just use a USB card reader and put the CF card in that.

Firstly, format your compact flash card on your embroidery machine. This is presuming you have embroidery files in your jef format your machine reads on your computer. Place your compact flash in the compact flash card reader writer connected to your computer, open the compact flash card in your computer, open the file emb5. Now you can simply copy and paste a design from your computer to your flash card. It works for me. Goodluck.
