I agree, there inverters are made cheap and because of that they can cause the lcds to go out. I worked on many of there and they always have the same dim screen problem.

No picture

Most likely there is a picture, but you can't see it because the backlight circuit may have failed. Take a flashlight and shine it on the screen at different angles while closely observing the screen. If you can see a faint image operating there, then the backlight circuit has failed. It is either the inverter or the lamp. If the TV is more than 5 years old that is the most likely issue. Today's sets aren't as durable as the old CRT ones that lasted 15 years. 5-7 years without repair/replacement is the new norm. Until and unless manufacturers step up quality and durability, this won't change. Many folks on this site try to repair their machines by buying replacement boards and swapping them out in what we refer to as "easter-egging" to solve the problems. This usually results in either a failed repair or more problems since these devices are sensitive and easily broken. If the set is more than 5 years old, you are best served with getting a new one. And. remembering that the new one won't last much longer than that, don't overpay for the new one you buy.

Display problems

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to identify the fault and possible fix :-

Do not have manual. Screen is black, will not light up

Hi rubypm...
Try this solution to your problem
Hook up your laptop to and external monitor, if the computer works then it is you lcd screen that needs replacing.
If it doesn't work then it maybe the backlight bulb or the inverter that needs repair/replacement.

The other day I switched on my Satellite A55-S1063 and got a redish and dim screen. I don't know if I have to replace just the backlight or also the inverter. I would appreciate some help.

If it's reddish then the tube is dimming - it's like a regular florescent tube that doesn't light up fully. In extreme rare cases (I've seen one such case in the past 20 years) it's the inverter. Inverters you can buy on eBay for around $3. I'd try that first. More than likely you need a new tube, and it's a HUGE operation to replace one. Best bet? Go to eBay and buy a used screen and replace it. If you shop hard enough you oughta be able to get one for under $30; if you want it replaced right away you'll always pay a bit more.

My hp dv600 when powered up looks normal but if i give it a few seconds the screen goes black and wont come back i shined a light and i do have picture but no light maybe ballast?

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Very similar to the Fluorescent lamps, (Bulbs), used in homes and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

HP Pavilion dv6000z series Notebook PC, is a general series designation. The EXACT model number is on the bottom of the laptop in a white Service Tag.

The HP Pavilion dv6000z series of Notebook PC's used either an LED or CCFL type of Backlighting.
Depends on which model it is.

As stated in the above information a Backlight is mounted in the back, or on the side of the LCD screen.
The LCD screen is composed of layers. These layers are held together by a metal frame which emulates a picture frame. If the Backlight is a side unit it will be held in place next to the layers, and inside the metal frame.

[Which means the LCD screen's metal frame, (LCD Panel Frame), needs to be opened on one side.
This will leave the layers which compose the LCD screen loose. The layers MUST be held in the proper placing when changing out the Backlight. Not an easy job to accomplish]

An Inverter is used to change the power coming from the laptop, to be used by the LCD screen, and Backlight.
90 percent of the time the problem is the Inverter.

The Inverter for the Pavilion dv6000z series of Notebook PC's is located inside the Display Assembly.

The Display Assembly is the
1) Display Enclosure Cover, (Plastic top of laptop),
2) LCD screen,
3) LCD Panel Frame, (Metal frame around LCD screen),
4) Display Bezel, (Thin plastic frame which surrounds the LCD screen in the front)
5) Camera Module
6) Inverter
7) Display Enclosure Cover Hinges (2)
8) Display Enclosure Cover Hinge Covers (2)
9) Wireless Antenna Transceivers and Antenna Cables
10) Microphone receivers and cables
11) Various mounting screws

[The Top Cover for a Pavilion dv6000z series Notebook PC is essentially the Palm Rest. The cover under the Keyboard]

With the Display Bezel removed the Inverter is located at the bottom.
(Display Assembly removed from laptop first)

When buying a new LED laptop screen, do I have to buy a backlight as well or does a new screen include the backlight. Both the current laptop screen and backlight are damaged on my notebook.

No, the backlight comes already installed with the screen. The only other thing that that you may have to replace (and i doubt it) could be the LCD inverter, but that is not part of the screen but rather the part which provides power to the screen so it will light up.

you should be fine with just purchasing a new screen.

Hp g5000 sreen does not light up as usal, i can see a the start up when i shine a torch at the sreen, what do i need to do to get working.

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. It needs an additional source of light.
A Backlight is used as the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to the Fluorescent lighting used in homes and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

The LCD screen is a composite of layers, surrounded by a thin metal frame that resembles a picture frame.
To one side of the LCD screen layers, and under the frame is usually where the Backlight is mounted.
[Note* Two Backlights are used in some models]

Replacing a Backlight is more labor intensive than replacing an Inverter.
Due to this, and the cost, the LCD screen itself is replaced as a unit most of the time, when it comes to Backlight replacement.

Example of a replacement LCD screen for the HP G5000 series of Notebook PC's,

[Note* Stating HP G5000 is just stating the model series. When buying replacement parts the EXACT Model Number should be used. This information is located on the bottom of the laptop, in a white Service Tag.

When replacing an LCD screen, the model number of the replacement LCD screen should be matched to the existing LCD screen's Model Number.
Inverters and LCD screens are matched together. Make sure you get the correct part]

An Inverter is used to provide power from the laptop to the LCD screen, and to the Backlight.

Note* 90 Percent of the time the problem is a bad Inverter.

Example of an Inverter for an HP G5000 series notebook PC,

The LCD screen, Top Cover, Display Bezel, Inverter, Backlight, and various screws, make up the Display Assembly.
The Display Bezel made of plastic surrounding the LCD screen, and in front of the LCD screen is removable.
Behind it is easy access to the Inverter.

The Inverter is approximately 4 inches long, and the width of a No.1 pencil.
Usually located at the bottom of the LCD screen, and right behind the Bezel.

This article shows replacing an Inverter and LCD screen on a Compaq Presario v2000 series Notebook PC,

This pictorial guide is not for the HP G5000 series Notebook PC, but the models are very similar when it comes to Inverter replacement.
The above link is to show you what is involved.

The screen goes blank at start up

If you can not see anything, then it may be your inverter (Replacement part cost is around $50.00), if you can see a dark image then your CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) is out. (Replacement part cost is around $15.00)
