If it works normally in Safe Mode, that is the place to run antivirus checks in depth, and also use Malwarebytes AV. Do updates for these before running.
If this fails, come back here for more help

go to tools menu in the menu bar in internet explorer, then go to internet options. Set your home page as you like in the internet options box.

Alternatively locate internet options inside control panel, it will open same box.
Here is an example of how internet options windows looks like:

Needle in the tower? Wow! Who told you that? Geek Squad.

OK in all seriousness this is what I want you to do.

Press F8 as the computer boots up.

Choose "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"

Let me know if you're able to get that far and then we'll proceed from there.

You might want to try going into setup and setting your boot drive options to DVD drive as your 1st, HD as 2nd and Floppy as 3rd. Put your windows disk in the DVD before boot and run the program from DVD.

If it's still under warranty, I suggest talking to your supplier or ringing Acer. If not, by the sounds of it you might be infected by some virus.. or a hardware fault. I am unable to tell. Perhaps getting advice from a local computer shop would be the best way, maybe allowing them to look in to it for an hour and seeing whether it's worth repairing.

Xp solutions

As soon as you start your computer, begin to repeatedly tap the F8 key until the startup menu appears. It may beep at you, ignore that and keep tapping until you have a black screen with several choices.
You have a set amount of time to choose safe mode before the computer automatically does a regular startup.
Tap your up or down arrow and that will stop the countdown. I recommend you Choose boot into safe mode with networking.
You should from there be able to navigate and perhaps figure out why it is failing.
If all else fails, restore the computer to factory settings after backing up anything you might have on it.
Could be it was for sale because it won't function consistently.

Emachine - no signal

This isnt a one step fix. Power off unit then while powering on tap F8 key to get menu with option to boot to safe mode. If this works could be a driver or malware issue which can sometimes cause windows to come up in safe mode but not normal mode. This is only a start not a solution.

My keyboard doesn't work, sometimes it does and then it won't type and the pointer goes haywire. my computor is possessed, haha. so sometimes it works and others the keyboard won't type, i have to keep...

If it works fine in Safe Mode, I would bet you have an issue related to a virus or malware.

Run a scan in Safe Mode and make sure your computer is virus free.

If it didn't work okay in Safe Mode, I would've said you have a bad keypad and recommend replacing it.

Turn on computer comes up to windows page with no pass words

It sounds like it might be getting to the user accounts and not being able to log in. I would start by going into safe mode--> Right before the windows splash screen comes up, start pressing the f8 key. Then when it gives options, choose safe mode. If it gets to the user screen this means its either something in your startup, or the user account files.

Once in safe mode, you can select the administrator account, and create a new user account, to see if you reboot to normal mode and it lets you log in as the other user.

Windows XP will load - then wont go any more.

Hello,
When you get to that empty screen, try hitting CTRL+ALT+DELETE.  If you can get task manager to come up, try going to file, run, and typing "C:\windows\explorer.exe".  If that doesn't work perform the following steps:
Reboot the computer.  (Hold the power button for more than 4 seconds to turn it off, wait a few seconds, then hit the power button again)
When the Acer logo shows, press ALT+F10.
Follow the instructions on screen to perform a recovery.  This will erase all your files, and reset the computer back to factory defaults.
If that still doesn't work, send it back to Acer.  You've got a dud.

Xp logs on then logs off immediately on acer 5100

I'd suggest booting into Safe Mode (press F8 after the POST information is finished on bootup) and then you should see an option for Administrator. If you can sign in successfully there, go to Control Panel and create a new account under User Accounts. Boot normally after that and see if you can sign in the new account.

Two questions: 1) is this XP or Vista? and 2) did you recently make any significant changes to the software (namely try to change the Certificate of Authenticity)? If what I suggested works, I'd say boot into Safe Mode again and then run System Restore for Windows. Set the system back to about a week ago and try logging in normally.
