Question about Washing Machines

Old Hotpoint dial seems off but cannot find starting point

I have an old Hotpoint washing machine. Not sure which one it is. Problem started with the dial not turning, so I used presure on outter ring to turn it. Then it was slightly out of alignment so that the start was actually before the start. Now I suddenly cannot seem to find where the start is. It starts to fill with water, so I add soap to start it disolving. Then add clothes. Come back later and there is no water, the dial barely moved, but there is dried soap everywhere. Tried other positions to no avail.Just had to replace a fridge and dishwasher within the last 4 months and really cannot afford to replace this right now. Do I just need to realign the dial? If so how? I just need another 6 months out of this so I can save money for a new one.THX

It appears your timer/main controller/CCU has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question!!!!

My washing machine has started beeping during the wash cycle - why?

Try running the same wash cycle with no clothes in the machine, just the water.
If it does not beep you are overloading it or the load is unbalanced.

Hotpoint - door locked, won't start, please help

to open the door to get your clothes out you will need to take the top cover off and then get a screwdriver to move the latch across.
make sure the plug is off so no power! and an engineer may be required if you can't acertain the problem.

Hot point wmlt80, dail clicking and turning, cycle wont start,

Yes, I work for GE what you need to do is to resent the appliance. Something should had happened with the computer of the washer. Just unplugged the machine for 40 seconds. You can unplugged or turn off the circuit breaker for 40 second and plugged back in. Select a normal cycle and let it run.

Try turning the dial back to off, and then try it again.
Make sure the door is shut properly.
Don't interrupt a prog once it has started., if you do , it will start to do funny things.
