Look very closely at the screen when its on, see if you can see a faint image in which case the ccfl tube in the screen will be dead. Also try the laptop on an external monitor.
Otherwise if you know what your doing, remove the battery, hard drive, optical drive, all but one stick of ram, modem/wireless card and try again. There is a small chance it will be the cpu or motherboard.

My Dell optiplex 170L keeps turining off and then

Possible that it's caused by a faulty hardware or a computer virus on your computer. For us to isolate the issue we must start troubleshooting with the hardware

1. Remove all the connection at the back of your computer
2. Power cycle your computer tower by pressing the power button for 15 seconds
3. Plug the power cord back in and monitor cable at the back of your computer tower (if it turned on, meaning that one of the device plugged at the back of your computer is the one's causing the problem, for you to pin point the problem, try plugging it one-by-one and turn on the computer each time you plug a device)
4. If it keeps on doing that, open up your computer tower (be careful to unplug the power cord and power cycle it to avoid static electricity)
5. Reseat the video card, turn on the computer again, if it's still occurring
6. Reseat the IDE/Sata cable of your hard drive and try to make sure it's properly plugged in, turn on the computer again, if it's still occurring
7. Reseat the memory, turn on the computer and test it again if the same thing
8. If you have 2 memory chip inserted in your computer tower memory slot, remove the other one and turn on the computer, do the same thing to other memory and each slot
9. If all else fails, restart the computer and keep on pressing F8 before the window welcome screen comes up - to go to advanced boot options
10. Boot to Safemode
11. If you are able to boot to Safemode
12. Login as administrator
13. Click start
14. run
15. type msconfig then press enter
16. click on startup tab and click on disable all button at the bottom part
17. Restart the computer and let it start normally
18. if the same thing happen, boot to safemode again
19. Login to administrator again
20. Right click my computer
21. Click on properties
22. Click on Advanced Tab
23. Click on settings button under Startup and Failure
24. Uncheck the Automatically restart under System failure
25. Restart the computer in normal mode
26. Tell us if you see any blue screen error, if so, post the error here

if all else fail, your operating system needed to be reinstalled and you should have the cd for the operating system if it's XP or Vista or Windows 7.

Powers on a couple of seconds, then goes off.

While it is not simple, you can find the issue... one step ata time... Here is how I fixed it.
First of all I tried simple stuff: remove the battery and start the laptop with AC adapter plugged in. Next. reseat and swap the memory module, remove the hard drive, the DVD drive, the wireless card. Nothing helped to start the laptop normally. After that I went a little bit further. I opened up the laptop case, removed the LCD screen assembly and reseated the video card and… Surprise, surprise, the laptop started fine with an external monitor attached. Just in case I restarted it 3-4 times and each time I got video on the screen. After I assembled everything back, one more surprise was waiting for me. The laptop failed to boot again with the same symptoms. So, the only part that I added before it failed was the LCD screen assembly. I unplugged the video cable from the system board and the laptop started fine again with the external monitor. Now I know that the problem is somewhere inside the display assembly (of course, if the video connector on the system board is fine). The next logical step would be opening up the LCD display assembly and check if all connectors are seated properly. Bingo!!! I wasn’t very surprised, but I was very happy. The video cable was half-way out from the connector on the back of the LCD screen. The laptop started perfectly fine as soon as I plugged the video cable back in place. Fixed!
That was my first experience when improperly plugged video cable prevented entire system from booting.

The monitor stays blank but the computer turns on fine, is it an issue with the video card or the screen? is there a way to fix this? thanks.

- Monitor plug is loose
- Maybe you only think that your computer has started. Hit the NUM LOCK key a few times, then CAPS LOCK key a few times. If you see the lights go on and off, your computer really did boot up. IF NOT, then the computer is really in trouble. In that case, unplug the computer and RESEAT the RAM modules; then try to restart the system.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Averatec 3700 got power but blank screen (screen is good)

hi,
please chek the booting sound is coming.
2.if the sound is coming then this might be the issue with display only.
3.if booting windows sound is not coming then this is the issue related with either m/b or RAM.
4.if num lock is responding(press and release num lock) then this is the issue with RAM otherwise with motherboard.
in case of clarification please revert.
thenk you.

Screen won't appear upon start up and I get 3 beeps but no screen

3 beeps POST code (power on self test) means RAM problem.
Reseat the RAM module/s and boot up your computer.
If you have two RAM modules, remove them both and insert one at a time to test them, to determine which module is faulty.
If it still doesn't work then replace the RAM module/s

Lap top screen goes blank all of a sudden

I assume that when you dont use your computer you put it in a sleep mode by pressing sleep button ..so if this is the problem you are facing than there is nothing wrong with your video card and solution for this problem is that remove both the power cables and also remove the battery for time being, after some time put back your battery in the laptop and plug the power cable and restart your laptop it will work fine...........
