I have a 1984 honda big red atc 200es I just got from a family member its been sittin for about 2 years so far ive totaly cleaned the carb made sure everything looked brand new inside and out it still idles high ive messed with the fuel air screw and idle at one point I got it to idle pretty good hit the throttle and it would idle but really rough and its back to missing back firing and bogging down when you hit the throttle any ideas?

Hey Anon,
Cleaning a carb is not an easy undertaking,, there are several tiny passages, tiny jets, and the needle/seat assy, If you are not trained to know these.. you may not get the carb as clean as it needs to be... Install a new spark plug... a new air filter.. and get a qualified pro to clean and set the carb.

SOURCE: XR 70. Idles fine. Won't throttle up just dies. Changed Plug, gas, cleaned carb...what am I missing

ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher at hand when working on carburetors.
Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Before putting the slides back in the throat of the carbs, move the clip on the jet needle one notch lower. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

Start with setting the air and throttle screws. Turn each one inward until it GENTLY seats. Back each one out one and one half turns. Clean the air filter and starter plunger. The plunger may need to be rebuilt or replaced. Check the pilot and main jet sizes. There will be a number stamped on the side of the jets. The pilot jet should be #45, the main jet should be #140.

The manual above should help. I clicked on index. Then in index Electric starter 23-2 shows an electrical diagram. I am seeing a starter relay switch and fuse.

Sounds like the carb may not be completely clean...Did you get the GENUINE OEM carb??. When someone tell's me they replaced the carb (why?) .. I have been repairing motorcycles and ATV's for 45 years. only replaced 3 carbs in that time frame..ALL the others I was able to clean and repair...- I get the feeling someone is guessing at how to fix an underlying problem?? Did you use all new OEM gaskets? Did you remove the piston to clean it ( bead blast the ring lands?).. is the piston on in the correct direction??. rings on correctly? .. hone the cylinder?? .. check the valves for leakage?.. All bolts/nuts properly torqued?, ..OK.. as you can see there are many variables that need addressing before any kid of accurate assessment can be made!! My suggestion is to find a competent factory trained mechanic and pay him for his service!!

My 2000 honda rancher has recently started to die after riding a few miles. It acts like the fuel stops getting through. It starts to stutter and then just dies and won't start again.. Needless to say it...

that is just a hand primer for when you run out of fuel. you may need to change the fuel filter. and clean out the fuel chamber and veins in the carb. if filter is old 2 years then it should be changed.
