Re: unable to install winXP on my new HP Pavilion dv5
Need details on the blue screen you are getting. What stage in the installation process does it happen and what does it say?It is likely that you do not have the correct driver for the hard drive or possibly another device. Is the xp installation cd service pack 2? or earlier?
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

I hope the following information is helpful.
If you are trying to install the driver for the Broadcom ethernet NIC that was pre-installed (NOT an ethernet card that you purchased and installed yourself), there is a softpack (updated driver installation) download available from HP/Compaq. It will install the driver automatically for you, just download it from the link below and run the ".exe" file.
IMPORTANT: Check to be sure that your current Operating System, and model of the network device you are trying to install, are BOTH listed below BEFORE you download!

first you download a sata controller of your hdd because winxp sp2 will not support a sata controller after you finesh download the sata controller copy the installer of windows sp2 then compile it again to gother sata contraller. or just download a windows sp3 has updated inculded sata controller that is the easy process
It is becasue of harddisk bed indexing.
For that first boot your computer with winxp then enter in recovery console mode then type in prompt "chkdsk /r'
then press "y"
then it fix errror on disk.
Then dlelete all partition and format 1 partition then install winxp.
I bought a presario from circuit city last year, and I paid $200 to downgrade to XP. Everything was fine until it crashed last week. IT went completely bizzerk. HP won't provide support, cause I changed it. Circuit City is out of business, not much help there.
You're Hard Drive may be dead. If XP is starting to install and then it goes to the Blue Screen of Death, that's most likely your problem. There's a slight chance that you're power inverter has a fluctuating power level that is causing a disruption, but that's very unlikely. Have you done any tests with any boot CD's to check the hard drive's function?
you will need to reformat the harddrive in order to do this.put the windows xp installation disk in and boot to the cd go from there to reinstall windows xp. be sure to backup your files you may want to keep
