Cd tray opens/closes by itself, intermittant full volume at start
I was given this stereo( i am the local tinkerer ), it kicks but when it plays!! my friends son forced the cd tray back in and it ''jams up and opens and closes randomly when you turn it on or off'' also, sometimes when you turn it on, the volume is at full blast!! and you cant turn it down!! it is a beautiful stereo, never has a spec of dust on it, i would like to try to save it!! my friend must have tried to open it up, because there are a couple screws missing from the cover. any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

It two things can cause this:- The motor is damaged ( you can listed closely to hear if the door motor runs when you try to open the tray. Or The belt that takes power from motor to open mechanism is damaged.
The "SCV" you see on the knob outside of the volume is Speed Compensating Volume. basically it automatically turns up the volume as you speed up and the vehicle makes more noise. given the fact that you don't have an owners manual i would recomend visiting http://gmownercenter.yahoo.com. you will need to register with a yahoo id but the site is full of information including an owners manual that you can download on your computer. hope this is helpful for you!
Dear friend, my sony dvd drive tray opens and closes itself, it is mostly a problem related to hardware. in my case I removed the IDE Data cable connected to the dvd drive and reconnected it again. now my dvd drive works well, I think the problem was the IDE data cable, may be a loose contact.due to this loose cantact,a jung signal goes to the dvd drive, which opens and closes the tray frequently without our knowledge.
i experienced that problem before.one cause is the cd itself.there cd's that are too thick so the motor has hard time rotating that makes vibrating sound.the other ,don't put something over your unit.the cover is touching the holder of the cd and makes a sound.just do the necessary things to be done like don't put something on top your unit.if not, then a manual analysis of the tech is the last option.
Try to disconnect battery contacts and connect it back. Check also if there is an emergency opening device. In some model you have a pin hole underneath the cd tray. push a staple tip inside the hole, and this will release the cd. If the tray still does not open, you may need to have a repairman opening your stereo at your local service point.
The loading mechanism is off by a tooth or 2. The tray out position switch is not being triggered properly and the tray will reenter the machine. Did this just start happening? It is possible that the sensor switches are defective too. Worse case scenerio is about $5 in parts plus the local labor rate for repair.
Your open/close button might be stuck, you can try and unplug it and spray it with silicone lubricant and push it over and over again for a couple of minutes and then turning it back on after about 30minutes so the lubricant dries down first.
If all else fails, have a local appliance technician take a look at it...
