Question about Dell 1600n All-In-One Laser Printer

Dell 1600N Multifunction printer problem.

We bought a brand new Dell 1600N multifunction a year ago. It's being working Ok in this time. But a month ago, a error message appear in its display" OPEN HEAT ERROR". So we bought and changed the fuser unit for this printer. Only one month, now it has a "OPEN HEAT ERROR" on screen.I 've tried to do anything that I read form this forum, but the problem cannot be solved. So I called to Dell supporter. He recommended we should buy a new printer. Do anyone have another idea how to solve this problem?  Many thanks.

For this printer, can you tell me how to check the power supply is consistent? I already have an electronic VOA, but I don't know how much voltage required for its fuser. There are 2 pair of wire connected to the fuser, so how high of voltage of each pair?
    Thanks for your help

My Dell 1600N multifunction printer is giving me Open heat error, I installed a new fuser believing the old one was bad, when I turned the power on after 5 second smoke came out from the fuser and the Printer gave me an Over Heat error, Turn the power off, left it cooled and then after 2 minutes turn the power on again, now is an Open Heat error, I inspect the new fuser and there"s a thermistor on it, the thermistor seems like is damaged (I can hear loose parts inside of the thermister), I checked the voltage in the fuser connector and is 120 V all the time. What control the voltage to heat the fuser, is it worth it to fix this printer? I already spent about $50.00 in the fuser.

Fuser issues - if problem is reoccuring then you are looking at more expense, are all vents free of obstructions (folders leaning on machine sides/rear) is machine being flogged, is power supply consistent, maybe even fuser bought was faulty, many options, try doing a warranty claim on fuser or replace again, even better get another printer, welcome to our throw away world!

What one does is disconnect power, unpug and remove fuser from machine, now fuser has a lamp, themal fuse and thermister in heating circuit, there may be other small wires going to jam sensor but we are not interested in those. we are looking at a circuit that runs direct 240volts, what we do is test for open circuit across lamp, then across thermal fuse. Thermister should be neither open nor short.

power supply to heater/fuser I doubt is problem, open circuit thermal fuse or lamp is

There is no point testing to see if we are getting voltage because power supply is being told by fuser to stop providing power so there is none present. except at inital power on.

TEST fuser out of machine without power for short circuit across it!

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Well reinstalling the printer driver is really recommendable. But before reinstallation I strongly suggest that you remove the usb cable then uninstall existing driver. After uninstalling the driver please restart the pc then start the installation without the usb cord unless being asked.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

If you turn on the printer in the correct voltage, you can call the Samsung and ask to warranty. Now if the printer is off warranty period, test the fuser lamp in the same voltage of the printer.
Take off the fuser, disassemble then take off the lamp and connect two wires in each terminal of the lamp (Fuser lamp works on the same voltage as the printer and is "AC").
Plug the two wires in the power energy. If the lamp is ON, OK!! If not new fuser is necessary.

Prints faint copies

If the print rubs off the page, this means the toner is not being fused to the page. Fused......this is done by the fuser. This would have nothing to do with light print.

The dell (1600n and 1815n /1815dn) printer drivers has a toner saver mode, which can contribute to light print.

To turn Toner Save Mode off, (Windows XP) perform the following steps:
  1. Click the Start button, click Settings, and then click Printer and Faxes.
The Printers and Faxes window appears.
  2. Right-click Dell Laser MFP 1600n, 1815dn, and left-click Printing Preferences.
The Dell Laser MFP 1600n, 1815dn Printing Preferences window appears.
  3. Click the Advanced button.
The Dell Laser MFP 1600n, 1815dn Advanced Options window appears.
  4. Click to highlight Toner Save.
  5. Click the drop-down list and change it to Off and click OK.
  6. Click OK.
One thing that you mentioned in your post "it takes the printer forever to warm up". The fuser does have to reach operational temperature in order for it to fuse the toner to the page. So it is possible that you are having fuser problems, because of the time it is taking for it to warm up. Another thing that can contribute to the warm up time is not plugging the laser printer directly into a wall outlet. This would be true for any laser printer, not just a Dell laser printer. The low voltage power supply is what works the fuser, along with sensors and other motors in the printer.

Replacing the fuser and or the low voltage power supply in this model of printer is not an easy task. If using a Dell branded toner cartridge and checking the toner saver mode does not fix the issue. Then you would be looking at more expense then the machine would possibly be worth.

Paper jam, Is this the fuser?

I have had the same problem. Changing the fuser is easy (about $85, and must be ordered through Dell) remove the 4 screws from the back, and you'll see the fuser. 2 screws, and 2 wires, and it slides right out.

Dell Laser multifunction fax failure

This is a question that your IT manager or phone technician should be addressing/troubleshooting. If phone line is not working, chances are that the problem therein resides and not with your printer. If you plug in a regular, non-cordless phone, test for dial tone. If none is present, suspect line damage somewhere. Try plugging in the printer to a different data/phone line if available.
