Question about Audio Players & Recorders
I inherited one of these Realistic MPA-35 amps and I am not familiar with it. I need to know how to connect speakers to it. There seems to be no way to do it, I mean I don't know where to connect the wires to the speakers on the back, It's not like the newer amps with - and + posts. Please don't laugh, I just don't want to burn anything out......thanx

It's not that this amp isn't like "newer amps" with + and - terminals, it's that this amp is made for public-address system use. This kind of amp is used in a store, for instance, to pump background music through speakers all over the place. The terminals you connect to are determined by total impedance of the speaker configuration used.
Most single speakers, or the two- or three-way cabinets for home stereo systems, are 8 ohms. If you're connecting a single speaker you use the "common" and "8 ohm" terminals on the rear panel. With multiple speakers, you need to figure out the total impedance and use the appropriate terminal. In series, impedances add. Two 8 ohm speakers in series would total 16 ohms, so you use the common and 16 ohm terminals. In parallel, the total impedance drops. Two 8 ohm speakers in parallel total only 4 ohms. You need to figure the total impedance of the speaker configuration and connect accordingly. Too great of a mismatch will damage the amp or speakers or both.
You might be able to find the manual for this amp on Radio Shack's website. Here's a link to the manual for the model MPA-40 which should have similar output terminals. The basic information about figuring out total impedance and general use of PA amps applies to your amp as well.

I have scanned the MPA-35 Manual to a PDF file. It is a high-quality scan and as a result it is 12 MB in size. If you would like the manual, send me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org), and I will email you a temporary link on myspace.com from which you can download the manual. It is in both English and French.
