After several attempts in the login fails, then you need to restart the PC and try again while you are connected to the internet.
Make sure that you have not logged in to yahoo mail from your browser/internet explorer, if you have then you need to log out and check logging in the yahoo messenger only.
Remove the application via uninstall from the add / remove programs option , and then delete the registry keys related to yahoo messenger or the complete yahoo messenger folder and then install it again , as many time it would work.
To remove the registry keys you need to start regedit.exe from the run command in the start menu and search for yahoo messenger for e.g. "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yahoo\Pager"
Delete the folder for pager if it exists.
Resintall yahoo messenger , and try to login again and it should work fine.

If you have vista, yahoo messenger 9.0. or even adobe flashplayer 10 (is needed to watch content on web browsers like Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox. Thier is a known conflicting report of them between each other. To fix your problem your gonna have to uninstall yahoo messenger 9.0 and flashmedia player 10.0 and try to find an older version of it.

My own experience is
1) Try another browser without add-ons or plug-ins
2) Run ccleaner daily http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
3) Log in here to reset cookies https://login.yahoo.com/config/login_verify/
4) Set browser to default - even if you only have one (don't ask !!)
5) User name - use full address if you have email address other than Yahoo . Otherwise drop "@yahoo.com"
hi u i had (or maybe have) this problem but a solution that i found is : you set a proxy in internet explorer , clear that with this steps: 1. Open your Internet Explorer
2. Go to Tools > Internet Options then click the Connections tab
3.Click the LAN Settings button and a new dialog box will open
4. At the new dialog box, look for the Proxy server checkbox, if this is checked, uncheck it.
5. Then your done, click OK button for the dialog boxes.
6. Try logging in to your Yahoo Messenger account.
and for this time , i solved problem, hope it works for you
