Hi There,
Assuming that you have a bootable USB Drive of some sort, this is pretty easy to do!
Just connect the drive to one of the USB ports on your MacBook, and start/restart the laptop.
Immediately hold down the 'option' key until you see a screen come up listing the various available boot-up drives.
Then, release the 'option' key, and choose the drive you want to startup from:
-You can use the trackpad to point at the drive, and double-click on its icon; or,
-Use the 'tab' key to highlight the drive and hit 'enter' to choose it.
The MacBook should then go through the usual startup sequence, however it may take a little longer than if you were starting from the internal hard drive.
