I have a westell 327 westell modem. On the bottom of my screen i get messages that appear back and forth constantly. One message reads "internet is now connected" the other reads "local area connection unplugged." Therefore I can not receive a steady internet connection. Ok on the modem I have a steady power light. Then i have a very dim e1(ethernet light) that flickers non-stop when it should be steady. The dsl light stays on constantly like it should. The internet light flashes on and off intermittenly. I have checked all the connections and wiring and everything is as it should be. A verizon tech told me that my computer needed a new network interface card. That is a bunch of bs for I have the same exact problem when hooking up my laptop to this modem and router. Can you please advise me what to do? Thank you so much.

I think the Westell Router/modem that you have must be the modem for the DSL connection. Charter is a cable internet service provider. You can not use 2 modems connected to each other. You have a charter modem , you can purchase a wireless router only. That will work. Click Here for more info about routers
Your dsl line stays the same. you're only changing your dsl equipment.
if you are not able to go online using the 327w, you might need to have it configured depending on the type of connection that you have. if you are using PPPoE (which means you enter a username and password on the modem to connect to verizon) you need your 327w configured for pppoe. but if you are using DHCP connection, any modem or routers should be plug and play.
Most verizon customers from the west coast uses DHCP while those on the east coast uses PPPoE.
You can call tech support to make sure which type of connection you are using.
You will need to assign a different ip address to the Westell modem - I am assuming that both the router & modem are using the same ip address 192.168.1.1? If that is the case, then assign 192.168.1.2 to the modem.
I'm sorry to say but you cannot bypass the modem capability of the DSL Westell Modem/router because that is really made to function as a DSL modem and a router at the same time, so the best way to make everything work here since you change from DSL to Cable internet just need to get a wireless router like a Linksys WRT54G that can make everything work again like before.....
-- who is your internet service provider -- what is the operating system of your computer? -- is this working fine before or is this a brand new router
you may try this to setup your router and see if this help solve your problem
Step 1: Shutdown the computer. Step 2: reset the router while power on then Unplug the router’s power cable. Step 3: Unplug the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for 30 seconds. Step 4: Plug in the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for its lights to appear
stable. Step 5: Plug in the router's power cable once the modem’s lights appear stable. Step 6: Power on the computer on and test the Internet connection.
